Our national institutions as lambs to the slaughter?

Liberal Senator Gary Humphries is sounding the alarm over what he sees as neglect of Canberra’s national institutions:

Canberra’s cultural institutions are looking more and more like lambs heading to the slaughter as we move towards next year’s budget.

National institutions across the board in Canberra have been subjected to a continued lack of investment since Labor came to office in 2007.

But Gary’s got it all figured out:

“The only reason that I can come up with is that Labor doesn’t want our institutions to record the failings of the worst government in Australia’s history.”

I don’t think this government is that well organised.

Some of the 150 or so heavily larded backsides on seats in the federal Arts department could be let go surely, and more funding go to these institutions.

Humphrey Bear has always been notorious for shutting up whenever Howard was doing over the ACT but squawking louding when Labor does the same thing.

Worst government in Australian history? I know that this opposition has a knack for hyperbole, but honestly.

“Difference is, the Coalition had more money than they knew what to do with. Gary may not have noticed the ecomomic crisis over the last few years.”

Oh – they noticed it all right – and promptly blamed Labor for it.

Of course the Libs would be champions of our national institutions and fund them generously.

Well there wasn’t too many of our national institutions crying poor under the last Coalition govt. In fact the extensions to the NGA and the new portrait gallery were ordered under the previous govt and the “Saluting their Service” program saw a sizable chunk of funds go to the AWM.

…besides, THAT written record would probably give life threatening paper cuts and cost a bomb…

..but it would STILL outsell Howard’s “history book“…

And in the race to return the Budget to surplus a lot more instuitions will get chopped…..

Gary seems to forget what 11 years of Howard Government did to the ACT and the whole country, particularly to Health and Education. Howard’s legacy could be a nation of people too sick to record history, yet alone be able to spell it 😛

If someone hadnt made such a fuss about having a budget surplus, then perhaps there might be some more money for this kind of thing
