Martyo has been out to the airport to see the new sculpture and sent in some great pictures with this note:

It is an amazing sight!

This is directly to the left when you exit the terminal – what a great welcome piece for visitors to Canberra. Wonder how much it cost?

Judging by how many bandages the figure the sculpture depicts seems to have, I think it’s some ode to the importance of OH&S.

Having said that the airport does do architecture and public art very nicely. Particularly love the water features and choice of trees.

Walking through the newer part of Woden near CASA or outside ATO in Civic, I’m struck by how barren and boring they have made it. And then there’s the disgrace of the National Convention Centre which looks like a poor man’s attempt to rip off Brindabella Business Park use of colour.

It certainly sets the bar pretty high before visitors see the rest of the city…

Many thanks Martyo, will check those out.

Excellent subtle use of HDR there Martyo. Which programme do you use?

Cheers Ben – Using Photomatix to do the HDR merge, using some minimal pre-sets I have created – then over to Photoshop to layer mask details in or out, and bump up the tones. Topaz Adjust & Noiseware Pro plug-ins to clean up the final image.

It’s a great piece of art, and a salient airport warning not to walk too close to spinning aeroplane propellors.

😀

But yeah – I like it.

Having attended the airport open day recently, I can say they have quite a lot of nice art pieces out there! For mine, they are a lot better than most of the stuff the ACT Govt has been desecrating the environment with….
The ACT Govt should emply whoever is in charge with organising the pieces for Snowy!
