Chief Minister Stanhope is trumpeting the latest celebrity planting at his arboretum:

Federal Environment Protection Minister Peter Garrett joined Chief Minister Jon Stanhope in the planting of a Queensland Kauri at the National Arboretum today.

The Agathis Robusta, commonly known as the Queensland Kauri, joins many other native trees which have been planted by visiting dignitaries and world leaders in the Arboretum’s formal Central Valley.

The Queensland Kauri, which grows naturally on Fraser Island and around Maryborough in Queensland, is a large evergreen that grows to a height of up to 50 metres.

You couldn’t make it up.

Why was this not a public event? The arboretum seems to be a very closed shop.

Peter Garrett, the only man to have more sell outs after quitting music..

I couldn’t agree more, a total waste of space now all of it/them. But it wasn’t hard to see coming.

You got to love how Labor have burried Peter Garrett during this election – their ‘star’ candidate only a few years ago.

I think he’s been locked in the basement of Parliament House (alongside Wilson Tuckey and Barnaby Joyce), and won’t be released until after the election.

To minimise PR risk & avoid questions.

Well, from my perspective, the Agathis Robusta is much better than the Stanhope monumental. As for poor Peter: well, I suppose, someone had poor some water on the plant and Peter is as good as a Green.

Sorry, I did mean pour….sigh

At least he quit, not like John “last tour” Farnham

Peter Garrett planting a Qld Kauri at the arboretum? What’s next? Charles Manson planting a Californian Redwood?

Antagonist, the Qld Kauri (Agathis Robusta) is frost-tolerant once established. While their natural distribution is in Queensland, they can be found in park and garden plantings down to Melbourne. A very striking and ancient Australian species.

Now being able to see the scale of the arboretum, it will be impressive.

But I can’t see families paying $50 a visit on a regular basis.

I wonder who suggested that plant? Probably the same idjit who trucked turf in from Queensland for the Canberra Stadium. Anyone remember how that one ended ???

I think it was a scoreless draw after extra time followed by a penalty shoot out. Thank god the Football World Cup is over for another 4 years.

Gee, I hope Garrett didn’t f#ck up planting the tree like he does with so many other things he touches!

I remember. When it died, they painted the grass green.
One could, in those halcyon days, go to Bruce Stadium to watch the grass grow and the paint dry all at once…

How many insulation batt installers died in planting the tree Peter?

Think of the number of weddings it will able to host simultaneously.

Despite all the bleatings from the RiotACT regulars, I think history will look back on the arboretum as a fantastic idea for Canberra.
