The ABC brings word that the Southern Cross Club has had enough of the Phillip Pitch and Putt and is closing it down:
The Canberra Southern Cross Club says it has lost $350,000 on the venture over the past two years.
An unsuccessful attempt was made two years ago to develop the site into a gym and hotel.
Chief executive Greg Mitchell says the club will now consider other business options for the Pitch and Putt course.
Regardless of the business realities (it’s not hard to make a loss if you want to) it really is far too much inner city real estate for a low value business.
I’ve said it before, i’ll say it again that whole round around in woden is a waste of time.
The traffic only comes from civic or goes to civic.. No need for a round about just a crossover of traffic from Yamba drive to the other one. One bridge to get rid of the whole mess.
ACT government should by the land as use it for their deathstar.
Shoulda called it ‘Bitch and Butt’.

I think someone has got into their weekend allotment already!
Maybe next boom cycle they can put a tall apartment building there.
Its been a long time since that course attracted a solid crowd, every time I drive through that roundabout the course is empty even on days like today. (i.e. perfect for hitting a little white ball).

I doubt the roundabout or the pitch & putt course could ever be used for much. They’re both smack bang in the middle of significant stormwater/flood mitigation engineering. Was all put there in the 70s or something after massive floodwaters swept through Woden Valley and killed several people.

If the Club can no longer put it to use for the purpose specified in its lease, it should be resumed by the ACT Government.
Woden Town Centre is sadly lacking in green space compared to the other town centres…it would make an ideal public park.
What this town really needs us some more crappy high rise apartments.
Sky Plaza’s 2,3 and 4 should fit on that site very nicely.
The Southern Cross Club would really like to keep a golf course or community facility there but dang it, they just can’t make it work.

What about most of brisbane?

Those floods predated the storm water channels later established, the place was a giant flood plain waiting for development.
I kinda thought clubs were designed to give facilities to the people, even if that part of the business made a loss compared to other parts (read the pokies). I guess the real issue here is the land value is substantially higher as apartments than it is as community facilities, so really goes to show what the clubs are all about.
