Pogos turning the tide in the war upon the Zeddites

The Canberra Times has a confused account of where the pre-selection War in Heaven (apparently conducted in the afterlife) for the Liberals Senate spot is up to.

Many Pogo* members excluded from voting by Zeddite manipulation (including Big Bob Winnel) have now got themselves some voting rights and it appears there will be another pre-selection vote.

Meanwhile the Beard Himself says he’s only fighting on because he loves democracy.

The ugly prospect now faces the Legislative Assembly Liberals of what to do with a Zed Defeated sulking on the back bench.

One also has to wonder how long the Zeddites can maintain their lock on party offices in the face of rank and file hostility such has been stirred up?

Kiddie Libs in Forgery or Foolery
By Joe Canberran 2 April, 2008

Someone called Aaron McDonnell was doing naughty things with the ANU Liberal constitution, I think.he tried to do the dirty on Gary Humphries back then. Now there happens to be an Aaron McDonnell who is involved in the School of Religion at St Christopher’s Cathedral. It’s probably a different Aaron McDonnell, but it might be the same one. Someone by the name of Monagel is also in the parish there and I have heard that he fancies himself as a power broker and king of the Kiddy Liberal Catholic push.

I suspect that poor old Zedget (make that young Zedget) has had his ego stroked by the other Catholics eg Giulia, Vicki, et al to the extent tha he believes he might do a better job if he was more out of his depth in the Senate where there are a couple of Senators with individual IQs greater than the entire Canberra Liberal opposition (and that includes the Speaker), plus a few of the Labor mob.

Have some sympathy for Zedget. He cannot hide in the Asembly like he thinks he could in the Senate and his Catholic admirers will be longing for the day in Late September when they can boast even more loudly about their man on the Hill.

I suspect these may lack the muzzle velocity of the other LSWCHP.

I don’t believe that’s true. In fact during the 1990s in the NSW Liberal Party, Young Liberal votes (and Women’s Council votes, for that matter) could be counted twice, depending how one structured the delegates. But that was a system where delegates were key; the size of the ACT means the delegate process isn’t in place, and it is direct member participation.

That NSW system has since changed (and I remember a fun constitutional consultative meeting where it was revealed that, statistically, the NSW Liberal Party was ,b>not being overrun by women under 30), although I believe as a result of their size the delegate system is still in place.

The Liberal Party has traditionally allowed Young Liberal votes as they would any ordinary member/ branch etc, depending on the structure of the division. Young Liberals are full members of the Liberal Party; the only difference is they have the additional youth structure.

This is all public knowledge if you know where to look.

(I’m only commenting on this thread to correct a misapprehension about the ACT Division compared to other divisions.)

3.2.7 The Rights of General Young Liberal Members

(1) A General Young Liberal Member may attend meetings of Young Liberal Council; but

(2) Except as specifically provided elsewhere in this Constitution, a financial General Young Liberal Member has no voting rights in the Division, unless they are also an Ordinary Branch Member.

I rhink you’ll find that to be an ordinary branch member in NSW you need to pay an unsubsidised membership fee and that no (or next to none) YL in Canberra forks out the ‘adult’ fee. Moreover, if they had to membership among that cohort would drop dramatically.

Whilst this is from the NSW Division Constitution, my info comes from a pre-selector of more than 30 years standing.

Fair enough. Constitutions change. Having been a member for 15 years and having visited a few different divisions, I stand by the view YL memberships have traditionally been counted as much as “normal” memberships – although I accept there are different ways this can be formulated.

If it’s not, it still sounds pretty tough.

And Girt_Hindrance gets the cigar. The LSWCHP is old fashioned but effective, so I thought it was a suitable choice for my RA handle. An interesting discussion on the topic with pictures may be found here

Back OT…I’m not a Liberal Staffer in Crimplene, but I did spend the day with a card carrying member of the local Libs, and he was filled with…errmmm…I’ll call it dismay…at the current shenanigans within the ACT branch that are erupting into the public arena. He was particularly scathing about the Young Libs.

He also made the telling comment that he was baffled because this was how the ALP usually behaves, not his crew. ALP party members, take note.

I wish I had a .38 special 🙁

That is pure magic – please let it be true. The hot pants would be just right for running around with the Benny Hill music in the background, which is how things might (on a charitable interpretation) be viewed with the local Liberals at present.

I hear word that the loser of the SEB election (a Zed supporter and Young Liberal) is desperately trying to get the entire meeting declared invalid – disenfranchising nearly 170 electors in one fell swoop. Further, several Young Liberals received an SMS on the day of their meeting, advising them to not attend their own meeting, so as to force a failed quorum and an invalid meeting – disenfranchising Margaret Reid, amongst others.

I hear word that Margaret was utterly filthy about the YLs performance and it was plain to all and sundry what was going on.

Let me say that again for clarity – the Young Liberals deliberately threw quorum so as to disenfranchise a number of electors in the upcoming Divisional Council Meeting. These kids are a disgrace to the Party and bring nothing but shame on themselves.

Dear YLs – you are not master tacticians.

I do believe the ACT Division of the Liberal Party is the only Division where the YL’s have a vote which affects the senior party.

Time it was instituted that the YL’s actions affect the YL’s only and they join and vote as YL’s or as members of the senior party (which would result in the death of the YL’s in Canberra).

Ahhh…if I did that, the ACT Liberal Party wet work crew would be tooled up and on my trail before you could say “Termination With Extreme Prejudice”. It’s not that I’m afraid of them. It just seems to me that if their termination teams are as competent as the rest of the party machinery, they’d all be walking around town shooting themselves in the feet and legs, or shooting each other, or tripping over banana skins and stuff like that, and innocent people might get hurt while bent over laughing at them.

If they really want to find me, I’ll be the large smiling bloke at the beer festival next Saturday.

I’ve been trying to come up with various military acronyms for LSWCHP without success…
Having said that, the phone rang at 34 Squadron VIP Transport one day and I answered “34 Sqn, Corporal Pork Hunt, we put the pee in VIP”. One of the engineering officers heard it and indeed peed himself laughing…

Think of that kid in school who always knew the right thing to say no matter what. Now picture him/her on the public teat.

Hmmm…One of my uncles was a minister in the Howard Government, I’ve shaken hands with JW Howard himself, one of my old mates was a one-time Liberal candidate for the House of Reps in the ACT and then senior ministerial staffer, another mate was a mover and shaker in the ACT Young Libs back in the ’80s and I’ve met Fitzgibbon, Clare and a swag of other Defence related politicians. I’ve even met Gary Humphries.

I could go on and on, but I won’t belabor the point that I’ve known quite a few politicians of all stripes over the years, and very little wool has been pulled over my eyes in that time.

Anyway, I think we’re singing the same song. They may have forgotten it, or maybe they never even knew it in the first place, but their job is supposed to be looking after the members of the community, not looking after themselves. This doesn’t seem to how their thoughts and actions are operating at the moment.

Zed strongly reminds me of that Italian cruise boat skipper who drove his great ship onto the rocks while showing off to the crowd ashore. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, and all that…:-)

It would appear that Zed’s control of the ACT Liberals is already slipping
away. His preferred candidate for the Presidency of the Southern Electorate
Branch (SEB), another Assembly staffer, was defeated at Thursday’s Southern
Electorate Branch meeting by a quality, independent candidate, who will
bring some professionalism to a Management Committee comprised of MLAs,
their staff and factional flunkies who have united to rocket Zed into the
Senate.

Johnboy is right. The vast bulk of party members, now known as the
disaffected rump, are ready to rise up. I predict that the first to be
targeted will be the Chair of the Women’s Council, an Alistair Coe staffer,
followed closely behind by President Tio Faulkner himself (also a staffer),
Vice President John Cziesla and Treasurer Jimmy Kiplox. Robert Gunning,
Chair of the Northern Electorate Branch is also in for the chop, given
perceptions of his role in resisting calls for a fair preselection.

The fact that Zed and Brendan Smyth have lost control of the SEB is
astonishing. If Zed’s own branch has lost interest in him, he will have no
hope in convincing the older, more conservative members of the CEB and NEB
that he is hot stuff.

The amazing story out of this current brouhaha is the comeback of former
party President Gary Kent. Kent has blitzed the party and the media with a
relentless campaign exposing the dodgy doings in head office. Described
several years ago by Alistair Coe as a spent force, Kent has bounced back
as possibly the most powerful player in the Division. Coe and the other
Liberal MLAs are being besieged by angry party members for their role in the
Zed coup and they seem genuinely bewildered by their complete misreading of
the party rank and file.

Now speculation swirls about the identity of the new general secretary of
the Canberra Liberals. At last weekend’s preselection, Faulkner announced
that former Federal MP and High Commissioner to South Africa David Connolly
would start in this role last Monday. Since then, Faulkner has written to
members on behalf of an unnamed general secretary on several matters but
calls and emails to this individual are neither acknowledged nor returned.
This shadowy individual, if indeed the Connolly appointment ever proceeded,
will be responsible for conducting the Liberal’s special meeting on 15 March
and any ensuing preselection. Hopefully he will take human form before then
to enable him to do his job!

Zed must be beside himself. His tilt at the Senate is turning to crap
faster than it takes to say ‘Young Liberal’.

This is one of the most accurate posts i have ever read on the whole saga

Shakespeare provides advice on matters of this nature:

If it were done when ’tis done, then ’twere well. It were done quickly

Not too long ago, politicians were people who were nearing the end of their working life. They had accumulated experience with knowledge and with that were moving into politics so that the community/country could benefit from their many years in the real world, dealing with real people.

Now we’ve got people that have never worked a job outside of the political system. It goes from University with young libs/labor, local council, adviser to a sitting member then a sitting member themselves.

The professional politician. A foot never placed in the real world, making decisions on what is best for the party first and the rest of us second.

Which is the most fun, Zed gets dumped and has to reset to the Assembly,
or Zed gets up and gets rolled by Humpries ?

I see what you mean LSWCHP (perhaps one day you will reveal all regarding your user name).
Hitler, on the other hand, was surrounded by brilliant Generals but was a tosser himself.

There’s a huge amount of plainly evident animosity within the local libs, combined with self serving ambition and cynicism. The entire crew seems dysfunctional. I like Jeremy Hanson, but the rabble surrounding and supporting him don’t make me want to vote for him.

They all (or most) seem to have forgotten that the whole point of the activity is the benefit of civil society, not advancing their careers and lining their pockets while exercising power over people.
