1. Surely blue jeans and white runners is the greater crime?

Detectives from ACT Policing’s Territory Investigations Group are investigating a robbery at the Civic Video at Ngunnawal Shops on Wanganeen Avenue around 8.57pm, August 8.

A male wearing a bandana and a hooded jumper entered the store and threatened staff with a knife demanding cash. The two staff members complied with the request handing over a sum of cash to the offender before he left the store.

The offender is described as approximately 30-years-old, 175-178 cms (5’9”-5’10”) tall, wearing a black jacket, blue jeans and white runners.

Police would urge anyone who may know the identity of the offender or who may have witnessed suspicious activity around the Ngunnawal Shops August 8, to contact Crime Stoppers.

If you can help police contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.

Silentforce – This is exactly why things are ‘about’ a certain time. It is always about unless you get the time off that atomic clock in France which time is set off.

On that thought is anyone really anywhere anyway?

Gee! I wonder how all of the electronic surveillance devices are calibrated. It would be interesting to know if:

The video camera’s timing,
an ATM clock,
a Woolies cash register imprint,
a parking voucher machine imprint,
a parking inspectors infringement device,
my mobile phone,
a police officers wristwatch,
on and on…
are within the same minute if coordinated and actioned at the same moment?

If times varied, would this be a reasonable grounds for a defence to plea that you were not where you were alleged to be at any given time?

Why make it significant? If the time is closest to 8:57, then it’s about 8:57. It wasn’t about 9pm, it was about 8:57.

Where does the line get drawn? Is 8:52 about 9pm? What about 8:49?

Right, so if the time is not actually known to the minute, don’t quote a time that precise. “around 9pm” would have been fine.

Significant figures, people!

I like the implied lack of precision in “around 8:57pm”, it’s like they’re apologetic for not having the time of the robbery down to the second.

Think abut the implications, in Court, of Police stating a definite time based on what their watch says…..then again ask yourself why they say ‘about’. Its a bit like ‘alleged’

8.57pm on one persons watch, is 8.59pm on someone else’s watch, hence the reason for “around 8.57pm”.

I’m not sure you would hold the same view after some nutbag junkie threatened you with a knife…
