Prison Rules B-Ball Band Comp in Rabaul Lane

By 18 March, 2012 7

Yesterday the You Are Here festival transformed the little used courtyard down off Akuna Street (Above where Electric Shadows used to be, next to where Toast used to be) into the venue for an inspired prison rules basketball competition amongst local bands.

Mixing short sets from the bands and very short three on three half-court basketball games the pace of the event never wavered.

It was great to see a little used corner of the city come to life. Even if the life hating Waldorf residents twitched their curtains huffily.

UPDATE 19/03/12 2:58: Many thanks to James Fahy who captured the RAAF’s Roulettes buzzing over the event in either the true spending of the YAH budget, or part of Skyfire overlapping:

Oh and the finale of You Are Here is this afternoon at 4pm in the Phoenix for a poetry thing. (that will be more fun than that might sound)

I hope this becomes a weekly event. I’m happy to settle with annual, providing there’s a perpetual ‘Matty Ellis’ head’ trophy.

How could I forget the multiple flypasts of the Roulettes during The Ellis Collective’s set?

I think I will miss You are here. Canberra needs more of this type of festival.

Fabulous! Wish I’d been able to make it.

One of the great things about Canberra that there’s so many cool events like this. One of the annoying things about Canberra is that these cool events are often poorly attended, and yet there’re always people carrying on about how there’s never anything going on.

Ten points to the organisers. I’m already looking forward to next year’s You Are Here.

Now with evidence of The Ellis Collective’s victory salute from the Royal Australian Air Force!
