Crikey are having fun with the news that Oxford’s Australian National Dictionary is adding “Canberra Bashing”:

Canberra bashing – noun: 1 the act of criticising the Australian federal government and its bureaucracy. 2 the act of criticising the city of Canberra or its inhabitants.

I’ve lived here for over 30 years, so I obviously like the place. Before that I lived in lots of places from the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, to Melbourne, so it’s not as if I haven’t seen the alternatives.

I’ve decided that I’m happy to hear about Canberra bashing now, because it comes from the chumps who aren’t lucky enough to live here and who’ve never even visited here.

I hope they all stay away. I just wish they’d stop sending their politicians here, though. Our home grown ones are bad enough.

‘something wrong here – “Canberra bashing” a noun? Surely its a verb?’

It’s a noun phrase containing a proper noun and a gerund.

And you missed an apostrophe, OLydia.
