The Canberra Times reports that Elkie Stuart, 21, of Red Hill, was crowned the first “Myer Face of Canberra Racing” on Saturday night.

It’s particularly nice because she’s connected up the wazoo with Canberra Racing types, who’d have seen that coming?:

But she shouldn’t have been too surprised racing tradition is in her blood. Her great-grandfather, Sandy Stuart, reopened the ACT Racing Club in 1946, and her grandfather, Dougal Stuart, was chairman for 10 years. Her father, also Sandy Stuart, has owned many racehorses.

However she’s none too pleased with the outfits the rest of you tarts are getting about in!

‘I used to go and see the races when I was four or five.

”The girls would be all dressed up and so glamorous.

”But when I went to the Melbourne Cup celebrations in Canberra on Tuesday, it was all really short dresses and a lot of cleavage, so different from the image I had in my mind.”

She is keen to see a return to classic elegance, ”nothing too raunchy don’t show a lot of skin.”

UPDATE: Mrs Grundy has noted that Elkie Stuart’s Facebook Profile is not a study in classic elegance.

It could, however, be argued that what’s appropriate at the races is not universally applicable.

Hypocrite.

I frack jbrown

hows them spelling moose?

I heart Elkie and I heart VVV. You go girls! I am all for a return to ‘ladies’ at the track and for supporting friends..that’s the aussie way! (well maybe not ladies at the track)

I must say though, and simply as an innocent bystander, by golly you people come across as pompous arses. Fancy having a stab at someone for letting their spelling and punctuation slip in the heat of passionate debate. Get outside, and away from the computer screen. Talk about people that you know well enough to formulate fair evaluations of, instead of some hot chick that shows class beyond her years. In addition shame on you for bringing family and position even into conversation. It’s as shameful as being a racist.

Just thought I’d add my most likely unwelcome opinion. Hope my spelling and punctuation were up to scratch…..

I dunno about those outfits… they look a bit ballgown-ish for day time. How long were those dresses? It’s a pity there’s no proper pictures of them.

Cyber Stalking – It’s the in thing!

It seems that the prize for this event is valued at over $10,000 and includes a City News front cover. So you are entirely accurate, Grundy.

Regards to your Missus – she has provided much entertainment. =-)

How much do you reckon that hat cost?

Poptop is simply the worst class of stalker!

So my coincidental comparison to City News was actually quite accurate…

I guess that makes you a stalker now too, poptop!

Gosh, if me and Mrs G are stalkers what would that make Skid?

*chuckle*

Don’t just Google things, or your results will be predictable, and may also miss things.

Think of Google as just being a superb generalist, unless you know how to use cache:, intitle: or allintitle:, inurl: or allinurl:, site:, link:, and related: modifiers.

Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_search_engines as a starting point, but it is by no means complete (and there are a bunch of US links there than have Australian counterparts that just aren’t mentioned)

It’s only creepy if you (or Mrs Grundy) start a Wikipedia page on her.

Granny said :

I google everything!!

Careful! That makes you a ‘stalker’!

😉

I google everything!! Although with RiotACT I often have to Urban Dictionary things as well.

Glad you can see that Mrs G’s post/comment was light-hearted and had no ill intent. 😉

Those above throwing around claims such as ‘stalker’ must have never used Facebook or Google before…

The internet is not some big secret repository of personnel files where you have to be a ‘stalker’ to find details or images of someone. It is all in the public domain and no different to picking up the local ‘City News’ and finding a picture of Elkie in the socialite section! Pointing the picture out to other people doesn’t make you a stalker.

Ditto Granny.

This and a couple of other threads do encourage me to ponder why such terrible things happen to people who are beautiful on the inside and the outside. I can only surmise it is okay to persecute people who are ugly.

I am also really ticked off at VvV.

It is other women that have copped the bulk of the degradation on this thread because of Elkie’s words, not Elkie.

I haven’t said anything mean about her at all and don’t appreciate the sort of generalisations that make it seem like I’ve been horrible to somebody when I haven’t.

I think Mrs Grundy’s comment was so innocent and funny. I am amazed that people took it that way. I didn’t even get the impression she particularly disliked Elkie!

On the bright side, I tip my hat to anyone who can create such a large avalanche with such a small noise!!

*chuckle*

Life in the Grundy house must never be dull!

Ok, so we’re all agreed, I wont let my wife use my login on RiotACT again?

Holden Caulfield11:36 am 19 Nov 08

This is all a storm in a Calthorpe’s House tea cup.

On the subject of dress standards at the races, I fell that the “Racing Industry” has been in a position where they can attempt to increase their business by attracting additional punters (thereby introducing people unfamiliar with the traditional dress expectations) or they can try and encourage only a certain sort of person.

> Don’t tar us all with your “RiotACT is a bunch of Elkie-haters” brush.

Ditto. I thought the pic of Elkie on Facebook was amusing, given her comments…I certainly didn’t & would not say anything negative about her though…I’ve never met her. She seems nice & from what you say she is….great!

I may have distinctly disagreeable methods, and will probably disgust some people, but don’t go so far as saying I’m disagreeing with you without reading what I’m saying.

Why, I once disgusted Deb Foskey into agreeing with me. 🙂

Look, everyone has a right to an opinion sure. Im just really saddened to see someone as lovely as elkie having what she has said taken completely out of context and people so willing to hack into her (once again with the exception of a few posts, as I said before, im not saying every post here has really disgusted me, just basically the majority). If you are criticizing me for standing up for her and being horrified and what has been said here then really go ahead.

Ok – upon reading that post again i mis-read your use of words. However, what i have said regarding her comments are still valid

Don’t tar us all with your “RiotACT is a bunch of Elkie-haters” brush.
I haven’t said anything directly critical of her except questioning choosing to compare fashions with the plebian throngs, or be judged by Jessica Good.

Howver, welcome to the Riot, but apropriate use of punctation and formatting will make you more likeable here.

Commenting “despairingly” – despairingly being the operative word here. So she was feeling a sense of despair or hopelessness at the way that other women were dressed at the races… AT THE RACES. not in general. She was not commenting negatively towards anyone in particular simply making the observation that the dress standards have really slipped. Which they have! can anyone argue that!? Ha, no this is not Elkie.

Is that you Elkie?

I was simply searching for a picture of what Elkie was wearing on the day when i came across this, and i can honestly say it disgusted me. I have known Elkie for years and i can honestly say she is one of the most beautiful (inside and out) people i have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I can not believe that you are referring to her facebook profile picture as an example of her being trashy!? Are you kidding me!? That picture was taken at one of her friends 21st birthday party where the theme was “doctors and nurses” and if you ask me that is one of the least skanky nurses costumes i have ever seen. What the hell are you talking about cleavage!? can you see any!? no! Yes, she has a glass of champagne. oh wow. that must mean shes a trash bag. She is a 21 year old girl. give her a break. She was simply saying that there used to be a time where there was a standard of dressing for women at the races (as there still is for men) and it does seem that these days the fashion has drastically changed from elegant, beautiful racing dresses and accesories to the latest clubbing dress with the highest stilettos available.. which will be sure to come off after 3. Dont get me wrong, i have nothing against party dresses but there is a time and a place, and i dont think the races is one of them. It does really change the atmosphere at the races, which is really unfortunate, the races used to be such an upscale event but teh standards have really plummeted recently. As for the dig at her music, seriously, what is wrong with you people!? Elkie is an incredibly talented country musician, i would have thought that would only add to her appeal!? She is a strikingly beautiful girl from the country who is down the earth, caring, generous, has a killer sense of humour and fun who is also incredibly talented and dresses well. As for the suggestion that she won because of her family connections and calling her a “Red hill girl” i think this is completely ridiculous! I was torn between anger and laughter when i read this. Would you Mrs Grundy ever refer to someone as a “belconnen” girl!? is this just a stab at her familys wealth!? how ridiculous, you must have one hell of a chip on your shoulder. Her family is the LEAST snobby family i have ever met, they are completely lovely and warm. They used to live on a dairy farm and yet now your refering to them as a “red hill” family!? why should where someone lives have ANYTHING to do with the type of people they are. This discussion (with the exception of a few posts) has really saddened me. That there are people out there willing to completely hack into someone they dont know at all because of absolutely nothing. Surely there are people who are more deserving of your criticism than a beautiful lovely 21 year old girl who very deservedly won a fantastic comp.

jimski, what does a scrubber mean?

Holden Caulfield5:57 pm 14 Nov 08

Okay, johnboy I think you need to out Elkie! According to johnboy on the 2XX piece this arvo he said Elkie had posted in this thread using a pseudonym.

I hope it’s not jimski, haha.

Hey bud, I’m glad she’s doing well for herself and all. For 21, she seems very successful and all.

But saying that ‘some country music is really quite good’ is just inexcusable. If ever we needed a comment to be moderated, that’s the one.

I know Elkie Personally, I’m not surprised in the least that she won, she has to be one of the most beautiful human beings I’ve met, beautiful looks, beautiful personality.

I’m a scrubber from way back, but Elkie and her family never treated me any different. They are one of the few families that worked hard for their coin, and deserve every penny.

I can see how many girls would be jealous of such a fantastic, talented person. She is making a damn fine life for herself

Well done Elkie

And furthermore … how is that photo creepy? Creepy!

She chose it herself for her profile, so surely she has some liking for it ….

Creepy? Go figure!

You are getting to know me so well, johnboy!

: )

Darn, I am getting predictable.

Seriously but, it was me who got ‘The Gambler’ stuck in Gungahlin Al’s head … yes, don’t thank me … and put the Bellamy Brothers on my Facebook account before I deactivated it. The two are not related, however.

*chuckle*

My friends very kindly didn’t laugh me off of Facebook! (Well, not to my face … *tee hee*)

Just one more point before I move on from this girl forever… I think if you guys were really into media monitoring you would have noticed that this year the Canberra Times has published three other articles about how girls dress at the races… Anyone see a pattern? I really don’t think what she said would’ve made a difference.

Kelso I was agreeing with all your points up until the “but some country music is really quite good” one. Spat coffee all over my desk.

kelso said :

This poor girl can’t win with you people… First she cops it for being a little rich girl from Red Hill, then you find out her family’s actually dairy farmers… You bother to find a photo of her which is really creepy. I know I’ll cop it for saying this, but some country music is really quite good. I think that you guys need to get out from under your rocks and broaden your horizons, stop being so judgmental.

I think the country music thing was meant as a bit of fun rather than a criticism.

Yep which is why I said I wouldn’t be silly enough to make photos of myself accessible for people to cut and paste on the internet. It’s not what i’d describe as a funny pic at all but to each their own.

And in my opinion, it IS way out of context, if that was the outfit she wore to the races then yes, maybe it would be worthwhile.

Someone wasting their valuable time to muckrake over someone they barely know, now that’s funny!

Someone giving someone a hard time for whinging on RiotACT is also pretty funny considering that whinging seems to be the driving force behind it’s existence. Nice one!

I thought it was funny – not in a mean way – it was just kind of ironic. I think the nurse’s outfit photo is a very nice photo of a pretty young girl having a good time. I don’t think anybody takes it too seriously, and I do think Mrs Grundy meant well. I also think it’s nice to see some gentlemen defending Elkie’s honour.

: )

Yeah, ok…fair enough. I still found it funny in the context of this post. I didn’t say I disliked her at all, I don’t know her…I’m sure she’s a lovely girl. She looks pretty & a quick google search suggests she’s got a nice voice for country music.

Elkie didn’t proclaim any like ‘girls aren’t classy enough anymore’. The comment was specifically about the races.

It’s akin to someone saying that people shouldn’t get drunk at funerals, and then being abused for being drunk at a wedding.

I dislike snooty rich people as much as the next guy, but really, how about some basic reading comprehension?

> How is it in context?

In the context of Elkie proclaiming that girls aren’t classy enough anymore…& there she is in a trashy nurses outfit. Which if perfectly fine I may add, but certainly amusing given her comments.

How is it in context?

It’s a goofy facebook image that is getting laughs precisely because is it being taken out of context.

Riiiight…

I dunno Mrs G whilst I wouldn’t be silly enough to post photos of myself on the internet for people like you to cut and paste as you please, I would be pretty annoyed if you did something like that to me. I wonder how you would feel about it if it happened to you?

You say no malice intended, so maybe it was just a bit of bitchiness right? From your comments earlier you sounded pretty pleased with your little discovery and you posted it so say what you want now, it’s all there clear as day on the screen for me to read into.

That’s not a picture of what she wore on the day so why post the one you found instead if that’s all you were looking for?

If there’s one thing I can’t stand is a liar.

To some degree that’s true, AngryHenry. People deal with abuse in many different ways, whether it be physical, sexual or emotional. Some deal with it better than others. I was always shy and sensitive and seeking approval from others.

I can’t stop anybody from insulting or degrading anybody else. But for myself, I would rather see if I can build somebody up and bring some happiness into their day.

I can still be a bit of a cow to people like arno, though.

It was just so nice to be outdoors! I have recently joined the local gym, and that felt really good. I have a bit of an addictive personality so I will have to watch out for that …. All those endorphins though. I kind of floated home, actually!

Also it could be true that I’m a nun ….

*chuckle*

Rightio then!

Because I think Nuns put out a massively sexually charged message, what with the whole all covered up in the habit thing, too much is left to the imagination, and the ruler to give you a little whack with when you step out of line!?!?! And that whole married to god thing, I mean how fantastic would it be for the male ego if he could get woman to cheat on God????

I’m glad you got out for a while, and isn’t it nice out there?

I agree words and insults do affect people BUT…

It is up to the individual as to how they are affected.

Energy, wether positive or negative can be manipulated and channelled.

How has that affected me?

I was scared to go out, so I became very isolated. It still isn’t easy for me to look a man in the eyes when I am speaking to him. Young men make me very anxious, particularly if they are loud and have been drinking. Even though I have virtually lived the life of a nun, I still wonder if it could be true.

Angry Henry – the Madonna/Whore complex is what is being referred to. That is the tendency for men (in the Christian realm particularly)to consider women as either virginal/holy/good (like the Virgin Mary or other respected mother figures) or as sluts/whores/bad (Mary Magdalene or female racegoers)with nothing inbetween. Anne Summers expressed it as “damned whores and god’s police”. Clearly in this thread there’s somewhat of a skew to the whore side…

Well I’ve learned something today. Thanks…

Thanks for the clarification, other posts gave me the impression Madonna was a bad thing, and well I guess it is when you point it out this way.

Also as a transexual pop star past her shelf life, who’s a fan of adopting african babies, loosely following Kabbalah and soiling the career of a once talented director Madonna is a very bad thing.

“Play the BALL people, not the man (or tart or slut or whatever other of the numerous, gender specific insults around.) “

Rosebud – insults are supposed to be hurtful, nasty and un-PC. That’s what makes them insults. If I’m insulting someone, considering their feelings is not high on my list of priorities.

Turning the use of the word “tart” in to a thought-crime is not going to result in gender equity, nor is inventing an equivalently applied term for men. What’s your endgame? Women are considered champs for being mad rooters? Men are mocked for being “easy”? Somewhere inbetween?

Regardless of where you want to reposition the frame of reference for personal morality, people will judge. People will judge; and no amount of railing against this injustice will make it otherwise. It’s the human condition.

I think turning the other cheek is a far better approach to take when someone judges you. Words can only be an insult if you allow them to be so.

Oh, and daddy’s got a porsche.

You forgot the huge snort! They don’t make TV like that any more.

I provide curve ball insults – people are not really sure if I insulted them or not…

i.e. ya flamin bandicoot – ya galah, ya fiery dog (Flamin Mongrel) etc etc.

Usually said in an ocker bush aussie voice

Deadmandrinking1:36 pm 12 Nov 08

I should note that my own personal dictionary of insults that I often let out when I’m annoyed hasn’t been updated since I was 12, which often leads me to say things that literally homophobic and sexist – but are usually not intended as such. The problem with insults is that they become standardized; often making them up yourself has people perplexed rather than insulted, and makes you sound really, really nerdy sometimes – which means people just stick to the tried and true, most of which have lost their real meaning through overuse. After all, the literal meanings of the f and c words aren’t overly bad things…

I think the only way to really get rid of insults that carry discriminatory connotations is for them to be so overused that they lose those connotation and therefore cannot be used to discriminate.

What terms are there in the English language that one could use to so easily identify a man’s sexual value in such a negative way that could equate to: whore, slapper, tart, madonna, etc.

I think it works the other way for men. Wanker is a big one (which many women use, mind you), which makes lack of sexual contact negative as opposed to frequent sexual contact. Also, some of the cruelest critics of women’s sex lives tend to be other women.

I know we’re misogynist, totalitarian arseholes, us men – but you women can be very, very cruel to each other too. Maybe the focus should be less on the gender of the insultee and more on the actual content. I frankly couldn’t give a toss who someone sleeps with unless it’s me. As long as it’s not illegal for obvious reasons, what you do in the bedroom, however frequently, is your business alone.

Halleluja! My point exactly. I’ll speak ‘bloke’ for a minute: Play the BALL people, not the man (or tart or slut or whatever other of the numerous, gender specific insults around.)

Factoid: Tart is actually a shortened version of the word Sweetheart. Almost any word associated with females eventually degenerates into an insult. Evidence the current use of the word ‘girl’. Ah, you’re a girl, don’t be a girl etc – an insult! I was at the pool the other day, and this dad kept prodding his four year old boy to get into the water – using these same expressions. The irony is, if he’d bothered to look in the pool, he would have seen all the girls already in the water! It was the boy who was having problem (with his dad is my thought bubble), not the girls.

There will be a sliding scale, but I won’t tell you when you have reached that point and gone from being a normal aussie bloke to a pedophile kiddy tampering beastiality loving c*ck sucker.

Sounds like a slippery slope.

From now on then, any bloke who annoys me for whatever reason, like he doesn’t respond in a way I want to my obvious charms, well, he’s obviously only interested in children and so must be a pedophile and kiddy tamperer. I might also insinuate an incestuous relationship with your uncle and possibly that you like poking your business into dogs. There will be a sliding scale, but I won’t tell you when you have reached that point and gone from being a normal aussie bloke to a pedophile kiddy tampering beastiality loving c*ck sucker. And if you do respond, then you’re a male version of a slut. Your willy is wet and who wants sloppy seconds. I might even go online and let everyone know where I saw you, what you did, and how you couldn’t keep your hands out of your pants in public, except when you had to take them off because you’d pissed yourself.

I only feel slutty if I forget to remove the lint from my belly button when I go out in public wearing nothing but my leopard print g-string and a big smile!

…or singing football songs at a funeral…

While I take your well made point about times and places for certain behaviour, this only emphasised it. What if the dead person liked singing?

Are you familiar with football songs? They are sung by other sporting codes too, hockey and rowing amoung them. The pantheon includes such classics as Frigging in the Rigging, The Beer Medley, the Municipal Dunnycart, … no matter how fond the dead person was of singing, I still maintain that singing these types of songs at a funeral would be incongruous, much like women wearing scanty night attire to teh races!

Granny, dont mind anyone giving you grief for how you look.
Dress how you want to and the right people will notice.

people appreciate me for who I am not how I dress, if a stranger wishes to write me off for the way I dress then that snot my loss.

This is demonstrated on me every toime I go to a hardware store, if I wear clean clothes and nice sneakers, I get condescending questions, when I wear my workin on stuff gear, I am treated liek I belong there, like a kindred spirit, like I am a cog in teh huge hardware machine….yet I am the same person as the one who was there last weekend who was popping in on the way out to an engagement somewhere.

That whole ‘there are ladies present’ kind of vibe just doesn’t wash with me, it’s 2008 and I think it would be equally as patronising to dumb things down or pull things back because we think that women can’t handle it.

Looks like a pretty innocent photo to me and aside from that while there’s probably nothing illegal about going out of your way to find and use someones photo (that they themselves have posted in the public domain) it’s a pretty pathetic and grubby thing to do.

We’re hardly making groundbreaking news here.

Of course what is appropriate at the races is not universally appilicable, otherwise drunk girls would be carrying their shoes everywhere and sh*tfaced blokes would be stripping off for a streak down Northbourne Avenue.

Elkie makes a good point with what she’s saying about how women present themselves at cup day and that seems to have been echoed in less articulate terms by some of the posters here (myself included!).

But hey, if cutting down tall poppies helps you deal with your own insecurities, and digging up dirt on people makes it easier for you to face youself then don’t let my comments deter you!

…or singing football songs at a funeral…

While I take your well made point about times and places for certain behaviour, this only emphasised it. What if the dead person liked singing?

*hehe*

You should write to the station!

Going for a day out with a couple of wines or beers is fun for all ages. However, when they end up falling over drunk, covered in spew, shoeless, staggering and crying (read makeup running); I feel very embarrased for them…
…I guess it is a case of live and let live, unless they spew on me.

I guess the problem is, anyone within range is in danger of being spewed-on.

They provide entertainment but like you said, upbringing (or lack thereof) is their downfall. I was very disappointed at the lack of footage on TV this year, of drunken floozies at the races. It’s always good for a chuckle.

I would have liked to see Ninaribena of Canberra’s Got Style Blog and her mate Lady Smaggle judge the gig. Both very sassy ladies and a lot more ‘qualified’ the Jessica Good. No offence but she’s about as exciting as an empty manilla folder.

I was at the Canberra Races on Cup Day with friends for a nice, dressy (our choice to go dressy BTW) day out. We are all within our late 30’s to early 40’s. The blokes wore at very least a dress shirt and pants or an open necked suit, where the wives all dressed very nicely, but well within their age range (dressy, not slutty – there is a difference). Although I am a believer in self expression and personally don’t care what others think, I must say that I was appalled at the behaviour of some of the young women and the young blokes (unfortunately, mostly the women).

Going for a day out with a couple of wines or beers is fun for all ages. However, when they end up falling over drunk, covered in spew, shoeless, staggering and crying (read makeup running); I feel very embarrased for them, as I am sure they are very capable and lovely young people.. That said, I did see some young ladies who were dressed to kill and had the panache to pull it off – sipping a champage or wine (aka pacing ones self). Maybe it has somewthing to do with upbringing or the circle of friends? I should add here that the youing blokes I saw although rotten drunk some of them, were generally pretty squared away. Why? Probably because they were drinking beer in opposition to wine and champers.

I guess it is a case of live and let live, unless they spew on me.

Sounds like most well paid public servants in Canberra to me

Well, what do your mean by their nighties? Is there a link to some pics?

If they go out wearing their nighties in the daytime, before they are drunk, they know exactly what they are doing. It’s just incredibly inappropriate, like wearing such attire to church, or singing football songs at a funeral. The fact that they get legless and can’t even keep their shoes on afterwards is just a bonus really, it just compounds the overall shambles.

I don’t know what that has to do with a girl getting in to a strange man’s car. These girls set out to be disgraceful messes, and succeed.

Interestingly, it appears that Ms Stuart does indeed appreciate the right time and place for tartiness…

Her facebook profile image just happens to feature her dressed in a delightful ‘nurses’ costume, complete with cleavage and champagne in one hand : D

A ‘return to classic elegance’ indeed!

[Mrs G]

When I was about 16 our drama class went to see a play at the Playhouse one evening. After it finished I was waiting at the bus stop in Civic when this middle-aged man drove up and said he was visiting town on business and was lonely and wanted some company and proceeded to invite me into his car.

When I refused, he said “What do you think I’m going to do, you silly girl!” in a tone of authority. As a nice Canberra girl I was used to doing what I was told by adults, so I got in the car.

He took me back to his hotel and bought me vodka and oranges and cigarettes. Eventually I felt sick and I went to the toilet. I don’t know where I passed out, but I woke up on the bed. I was still dressed but he was lying on me and his hands were all over me.

When he realised that I was conscious he came on my stockings, which I threw in the bin, and drove me home.

I felt degraded and disgusted, but I was just glad to be alive. I walked in the door and went straight to the toilet and vomited.

My mum was not impressed. While I was in there she kept telling me, you have two or three drinks all night and you sip them slowly. I’ve never been a big drinker, but I have followed that advice more or less ever since. I never drink past the point where I begin to feel nauseous. Never. It is very important to me to be in control.

I think I would have felt similarly if I had defecated on my clothing. It is easy to judge people for being young and stupid, but I wasn’t a slut. I was a virgin. I think it’s just as easy to assume that this girl was appalled and devastated by what happened, and may even have learned a lesson. Since we have no way of knowing either way, I would personally prefer to give her the benefit of the doubt.

Respecting women is all very well, but how do you respect one wearing a small (cheap and nasty) nighty, laddered stockings, no shoes, WAAAAY too much cheap makeup, a ton of attitude and perhaps if lucky a few skerricks of vomit or poo?

These people are the same ones who tailgate everyone mouthing insults in their frangipani-festooned Excels and Lancers, so seeing them meet their downfall is quite good fun.

Me I’d say do what makes YOU happy.

It doesn’t make me happy to be called a tart or a slapper. It doesn’t make me happy to wear a burkha either.

What makes me happy is things like walking into All Bar Nun and having the Riot men welcome me and treat me with such warmth and respect even after Hamstergate has just broken and I’ve been worrying about whether I should walk through the door ….

: )

I thought Dog was a compliment, as in “Wassup Dawg” Snoop Doggy Dog!

Is she the lady that wore the stop staring dress? I love that rockabilly style.

I have never been to the races as I have no interest, and I don’t need to be told I wear something with style. It does annoy me when women seem to follow whatever trends they think are in and end up looking ridiculous. Wear what you are, don’t worry about fashion and stop trying to out-do everyone out there. Thats my plan.

…And yes, after a sabatical/hospital visit, I am back :O)

Dog.

Plenty of blokes will call other men dogs, mostly if they’re sleeping with married women.

They probably won’t say it in front of women though.

Tosser. W*nker. Dickless. C*ck-smoker.

Probably not in the same league, mind you.

What terms are there in the English language that one could use to so easily identify a man’s sexual value in such a negative way that could equate to: whore, slapper, tart, madonna, etc. Once upon a time, one coujld have expressed homophobic insults, but noone would do that today – not publicly anyway – but with women, it is somehow still OK.

I have nothing against being unimpressed by Ms Poo in the Pants or Ms Vomit in the Handbag (erk) – but language gentlemen, puhleese! There are still sober slappers present.

I think answering core contradictions of the human condition is beyond our scope here.

Me I’d say do what makes YOU happy.

Here’s a thought – perhaps we could try just respecting women.

How? I don’t understand the rules. You get taught by society from the time you’re a very small child that your currency and worth as a woman involve being pleasing to men, so you try and learn what is pleasing. So what should a woman wear? Do I have to decide between being a madonna and being a whore? Why? And why am I a whore if I express my sexuality? Should I, in fact, wear a burkha? Perhaps Sheik Taj Din al-Hilali is right after all.

No, I don’t think so poptop. If I do that I’ll be a tart or a slapper. What do they want? If they want tarts and slappers why do they speak so derogatorily of them?

Whore/Madonna. Get used to it.

Interesting how this meatmarket is discussed fairly dispasionately, but the moment a spinning tyre or revving motor is associated with female exhibitionism, the force of the RA is brought to bear, and the participants mercilessly derided.

No, I don’t think so poptop. If I do that I’ll be a tart or a slapper. What do they want? If they want tarts and slappers why do they speak so derogatorily of them?

Granny, we should remember that the guys really aren’t as picky as we girls sometimes think.

I think the message here is pretty clear –
(a) turn up as naughty or naked as possible, and
(b) retain control of bodily functions.

Fashions in the Field is Miss Summer Nats with pretensions.

By the way, her comment in the CT doesn’t match her official comment over on the Thoroughbred Park website…
Um, skid, that’s called journalism.

Besides, there was only two quotes in the press release and who can get a whole story out of that?

It would be nice if you guys just decided how you want us to look so we can avoid the insults when we get it wrong.

Oh dear- yet another example of when what women wear is completely unrelated to the purpose of the day, but remains all that is talked about a week later…..

Umm, what was the purpose of the day then? Nobody cares about a horse race in Melbourne any other day of the year.

People behaving badly are always hilareous; it isn’t a gender thing.

Blast, stuffed my /b tag

Not to undermine the girl’s ability to tell that a lady wanting to be put up for Fashions on the Field shouldn’t have visible grass stains on her knees or shoulders (at least not in front of the judges), but according to the thoroughbred Park site, the judges were:

international model Belinda Riding, local newsreader, Jessica Good, lifestyle editor Megan Haggan, and Myer Manager Brian Cronk

Oops. Moderated.

Sorry Mr Language Filter.

I’m with Angry Henry on this one Rosebud. I doubt you’d be especially charitable towards a suit-wearing yob who’d crapped his reggies at the races. Dare I suggest that you might even make some disparaging comments regarding his self-control, breeding and social standing.

Dismount your (ahem) high horse.

Cup day is like Schoolies for twenty-somethings; and conducted with less decorum. If that’s your bag, go nuts; but I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in saying it’s a pit of drunken dickheadedness masquerading as the “Sport of Kings”.

‘sides – dressing up is overated. I get enough suit action at work.

I believe it’s just not a real party until someone poos their pants.

Maybe at the race track? Who are these ogling creepy guys hanging about
outside women’s toilets, staring down their shirts and up their skirts and
judging their trashiness on a scale of one to show us ya tits?

For those interested in broadening their drivel, here is a handy reference

“Women aren’t welcome in the shearing sheds. They’re only after the sex.”

Regarding your tourettes comment – syphy ball-bag, bollocks and flaps!

And FYI having been working at the racecourse on Cup day I wasn’t simply ‘hanging about outside womens toilets’, the person I refer to was actually an acquaintance through work and a friend had to go in and help her out. The girls trashiness wasn’t gauged on a ‘scale of one-to-show us ya tits’ but the fact she had managed to defecate all over herself and her dress which, at the beginning of the day, was probably worth a few hundred bucks.

I do agree that some of the guys on here have made some pretty sexist comments, but maybe those comments stem from the way the people they are referring to have carried themselves in the first place. i.e. trashy, drunken and tartish with a hint of poo lingering on their dress. Other comments have been probably a little low brow but let’s not forget where we are.

I have a girl who, likes me a hell of a lot, we even live together. She likes me because I’m attractive, witty, intelligent, have a great sense of humour and becuase I don’t go to the races wearing next to nothing, get smashed and lose control of my bodily functions.

Straight to the poolroom 🙂 I often have this thought when reading RiotACT

I doubt Flemington is any different at all actually Skidbladnir

By the way, her comment in the CT doesn’t match her official comment over on the Thoroughbred Park website…
http://www.thoroughbredpark.com.au/News.asp

Sure, she may be one of those people who enjoy the horses and horse affairs (probably), is financially deeply affected by the equine flu outbreaks (looking at her family history I’ll say probably), and she may well be able to discuss current events with everyone and everyone, or just be a really nice girl…

But why she would choose to compare her own fashion tastes against people who will happily vomit in their handbag and think a mentos will cover their woes, or know from experience that the best way to avoid staining a new dress is “Finish him off yourself, then spit”, I don’t really know.

Flemington might be a classy day out for a girl or a place for bachelors to find a refined woman of grace and deportment, but the average female at Thoroughbred Park is probably a dyed-in-the-wool slapper or one of the racing mares.

You didn’t seriously think it was about the horses, did you?

Always amuses the hell out of me that it takes up 8 pages in the “Sports” (sic) section.

I totally agree with the lady. I gain vicious enjoyment from watching the (usually tabloid media) footage of the kath and kym-esque floozies wearing nighties and disco outfits to the races, and staggering about with everything sliding south, shoeless, by the afternoon. What disgraceful things they are.

Where on earth did they get the idea that you wear nightwear to the races?

A picture with the story would have been nice but I think this lady has a right to have an opinion on what people are wearing to the races.

“Tarts, whores, balloon breasted, shat on drunken strumpets with no

“Women aren’t welcome in the shearing sheds. They’re only after the sex.”

I’m all for tarted up looks with the occasional chance of nipple slippage.

After moving to Canberra from Melbourne I have to say SOME of the ladies at the races leave nothing to imagination. Now im not saying that’s a bad thing if you’re you’re passed out on the toilet at mooseheads but not at the races, there is a time and a place I think.

Oh dear- yet another example of when what women wear is completely unrelated to the purpose of the day, but remains all that is talked about a week later…..

For anyone shocked at the degree of tartflesh on display and pheromones in the air on a field day…
You didn’t seriously think it was about the horses, did you?
They’re just a pretext for a gathering, only the gambling addicts and owners pay attention to those…
Everyone else is either making business deals or filling the skirts with champagne…

^^ as per above.

Ladies should never be discouraged from showing cleavage or thigh…never.

I went there (my fiancee had free tickets through work) and I was shocked at the level of tart around the place.

…I LOVED IT!

The point that fashion (and binge drinking) are going out of style is a point that has been pushed hard throughout this season and also the last.
Isnt it funny that it was orginally ‘heir heads’ that began the trend of dressing like tarts and frickin themselves up on drugs and grog in the first place…and now we have other ‘heir heads’ telling us that we shouldnt do that because its not classy.
I’m confused. Someone get me a beer.

She likes racing, she made an effort, good for her. I’ve seen some pretty messed up chicks out at that race course so it’s refreshing for the guys to know that a few of the fillies are hard to get. It can get pretty skanky at the races, I remember one year a girl had to be rescued from the toilets where she’d passed out and shat all over herself, doesn’t matter how facinating the fascinator is after that my friends.

I think Elkie has a point, maybe the sport of kings doesn’t need to be surrounded by whores.

At least we’ve raised the bar today and moved on from ‘the hottest checkout guys in Canberra’ hey!?!?!

Yes I must concur, big fan of cleavage, certainly has its place.

I’m all for cleavage, but pushing them up so tight they’re basically hanging out the top like squashed balloons just isn’t a good look.

Keep it classy, ladies

A few years back I knew Elkie’s older brother and her Dad. Haven’t seen either for a few years now, but I can say that they’re not your classic Red Hill types. Former dairy farmers (they owned the Dairy Flat farm and started out the turf farm there to diversify after dairy deregulation), proud yobs and all round good blokes.

FWIW, I don’t think there’s any suggestion that anything innappropriate has gone on here (I can’t see any money having changed hands over this, somehow). Given Elkie, and her family’s interest in racing, is it that much of a stretch to imagine that she might have put a bit more effort (and cash) into her frock for the carnival than most?

They all had magnificent thighs but not anything resembling a redeeming feature between them.

I went to the Canberra races once, and the girls there were all either tarted up rich girls or authentic slappers. They all had magnificent thighs but not anything resembling a redeeming feature between them.

But, thats why I was there…

less is better
