Reasons to listen to talk radio

Sometimes a life without talk-radio does mean missing out on the fun.

Crikey have a fun snippet today:

Cosy Canberra: Politics in the ACT is nothing if not cosy. In fact, it’s so cosy you can’t even hide behind a false name on talkback radio. Canberra Times editor-at-large Jack Waterford was bemoaning the lack of talent on the Assembly backbench on ABC radio yesterday morning in the wake of drink-driving minister John Hargreaves stepping down. A listener who identified himself as “Ben” rang in, irate, to say Waterford was defaming the backbench – and more than a few people immediately recognised “Ben” as one Brendan Scott, son of former Labor federal MP Les and spouse of ACT Labor backbencher, Karin Macdonald. Liberal MLA Vicki Dunne, along with others, immediately rang the producer only to have presenter Alex Sloan outing Dunne on air for outing “Ben”. It’s all cosy in Canberra.

Dusty mentions pensioner Del. Del is a well known cranky Liberal voter who spends her time ringing 2CC,2UE and 2CN dumping on Beazley, Stanhope etc etc. She always puts forward a pro Howard view.

I nearly drove off the road laughing – but from recollection it went somthing along the lines of – DUS are constantly assessing waste disposal needs throughout the city – seeking to balance precious resources whilst prioritising this governments commitment to No Waste by 2010 – I think he promised to look into the specific issue and then the guy was shunted off air “so his details could be provided to the Minister for further action”

Big Al – that is the funniest thing I’ve ever heard! Did the brave leader respond to the angle grinder trick with good humour?

Yes – there are almost no public bins in any Canberra parks anymore. And they wonder why there is rubbish all over the place…

My favourite was the guy from somewhere in Belco who rang it to say that Urban Services regularly forgot to empty a rubbish bin at the play ground near his house and that as a result there was often litter overflowing from the bin … Stanhope promised that someone from DUS would fix the problem immediately and that the caller no longer had cause for concern.

The following Friday, the same guy rings back – apparently some guys from DUS came to the playground, whipped and angle-grinder out of the back of their truck and removed the bin – now they no longer have a problem with forgetting to empty it…

Is anyone else tuning in to Friday Chief Minister Talkback on 2CN 666AM? If I’m home it’s a must at 9am. This mornings highlights included a mini-spat between mike-hogging Mr Stanhope and poor Alex Sloan who valiantly tried to cut out his blatant spin-doctoring (but he is a politician so…), I loved pensioner Dell who really got up him big time about his recent payrise (go Dell!) and numerous other axe- grinders. The usual road and traffic complaints and even one older woman who actually rang in to sycophantly congratulate him on the Budget.
Recommended listening.
