Rego doesn't want fuel to feel lonely.

For those of you that missed it, the ABC tells us that Car Registration, 5 Year License Fees, Parking Permits and Number Plate fees are all going up.

They also point out that this is Yet Another Burden in these days of rising fuel prices.

From what little they say, I’m assuming that how much you pay for Rego now will determine the actual dollar increase – that is, it’s a percentage rise rather than a fixed amount increase. I’m not sure about the others.

I’m wondering if this will offset any (possible) savings of being able to shop for our own Third Party Insurance.

$2000 to rego a ute!!. Thats just insane. Thats the sort of extortion you would expect of a 3rd world corrupt junta.

Holy crap. Just how high is this price rise? I stupidly paid for 6 months last time, to stagger out my big bills (which were all coming in around april). Might have been a very bad idea.

Sometimes I love being a New South Welshman. A couple of weeks ago I had to renew my rego on my small car. With the car being now 3 years old I did the mandatory safety inspection (and paid for it), paid my third party personal insurance, paid my rego, and paid my comprehensive insurance. And it came to less than a thousand bucks all up.

Woohoo.

When I was living in the ACT I used to get the craps that NRMA hits all drivers with the same amount for CTP insurance – which seems to correspond to the highest rate paid for CTP elsewhere (young bloke with bad driving history in fast car).

There is nothing ‘inexplicable’ about the monopoly enjoyed by NRMA in CTP insurance in the ACT. They are the only company willing to do it! The market is open, and any insurer can enter it if they so wish – in the past both QBE and AAMI have investigated the possibilty and run away screaming. The CTP pool simply isn’t big enough to sustain more than one insurer and there have been times (particualry during the HIH crash) when NRMA has seriously considered pulling out. No conspiracies, no c-ck-ups – just market failure becasue the market is too small.

You will find that NRMA is the only CTP insurer in the ACT because it is actually legislated as the only insurer. However this will change from 1 July when that part of the law is removed and the government will only send you the bill for the registration, you will have to go and find your own CTP insurance.

El: the reason for the exclusion of the CTP figure on their costing is because of the law change, I’d expect the price change to come into effect on 1 July at the same time as the deregulated CTP.

Another tax increase for no particular reason, stanhopeless must really want us to vote him out. It’s becoming more likely by the day.

Utes and commercial vehicles can use the loading zones, however still need to be doing “commercial business” ie – loading unloading vehicles etc. Not going in to do shopping for 15 minutes and then leaving as some think they can do.

Why is a ute classified as a light truck and hence attract a higher rego fee, when it is no larger than a station wagon?

Why do businesses pay more to register a vehicle than an individual registering the exact same vehicle?

Utes (2 and 4 wheel drive) are Fringe-Benefits-Tax exempt. I know some people own them in their own names, but for people salary sacrificing them it more than makes up for any extra costs.

Business vehicles (mine is a station wagon) pay about $120 extra for the privilege, but get a ‘FREE’ 10 minute loading zone permit. Utes/vans/trucks get to park for up to 30 minutes in a loading zone.

I do expect a reduction of about $150 in the third party insurance premium once competition is introduced, based on premiums listed for QBN and surrounds postcodes.

Andy pandy is correct. Utes are classified as “Commercial vehicles” the same as trucks and vans – no permit required.

Permits are available for regular passenger vehicles, but cost extra on top of normal rego.

madman you don’t need a loading zone permit if you have a goods carrying vehicle, ask a parking inspector, its based on body shape (I have been parking in loading zones for 15 years in utes).

I could be wrong though

andy, you need a loading zone permit! You could have a normal car in a loading zone if you had a permit. Mums have utes – doesn’t make it right that they can park in any old loading zone just cause they have a ute…

CRT I am guessing its due to the likely higher use of business vehicles on the road and similarly for utes as they are designed as goods carrying vehicles, you get to park in loading zones though (with utes that is).

Plenty of ACT personalised number plates are already insanely overpriced… have they considered that maybe they’d make more money out of the whole thing if they weren’t scaring people off with $1000+ price tags?

Why do they “have” to have a price rise? This just contributes to rising inflation. Why do gov’t fees and charges and taxes go up and up, but services don’t? Where’s all the money going?

In the ACT the average family car will now cost around $374 a year to register, that is compared to around $268 dollars in New South Wales.

Where do they come up with this sh!t? And why has the ABC ‘conveniently’ left out the extra $300 or so required for compulsory third party insurance, paid to a company which inexplicably has been granted a monopoly on said service?

Anyway, it’s a 4.25% increase – around $30 for me. More likely to be $50-$60 for trades/company registered vehicles.

Cnuts.

*sigh* I hate the government.
