Chief MInister Gallagher has put her Mayor’s hat on to let it be known what she’s got planned for the roads:

“Local contractor Guideline ACT was recently awarded the $1.3m contract for the upgrade of the Southern Cross Drive and Florey Drive intersection in Belconnen, with works expected to commence this month.

“The project will improve traffic flow and safety at this busy intersection, particularly in peak travel times and will also provide improved pathways and access for pedestrians and cyclists. Traffic signals will be installed to guide all movements through the intersection which will improve vehicle and pedestrian safety.

“In addition, work to upgrade a 1.8 kilometre section of Sutton Road in the ACT, improving road safety for people travelling across the NSW border into Canberra is starting next week.

“Project funding of $2 million has been provided by the Australian Government through the Roads to Recovery program with the work to be undertaken by Hewatt Earthworks Pty Ltd.

“Sutton Road is an important transport corridor linking rural NSW and Womboin to the regional capital, Canberra, and carries in excess of 2,500 vehicles per day.

“The works will include pavement rehabilitation, targeted improvements to the road alignment and associated improvements to stormwater drainage, signage and infrastructure.

“The ACT Government is currently undertaking numerous projects across Canberra to improve road safety and reduce travelling times.

“These include the Majura Parkway, the Belconnen to City transit way, the Monaro Highway duplication and the Cotter Road upgrade as well as the recently completed upgrade to the Kings Highway,” the Chief Minister concluded.

Correct, followed 2 hours later by a smaller two car smash where the side-mirror came through into the cabin of the ute and took away part of the driver’s cheek and most of his right ear.

Ear, ear…to that cheeky comment. Ute be sitting back reflecting on this too, if you were awake this time of the morning!

Better hurry up with the Southern Cross and Florey Drive intersection upgrade. There was another accident there the other day, 4 cars involved according to the missus.

I don’t know how many times this afternoon around Kippax [Starke St., Sth X Dr etc.] there were some P platers waiting to turn right, couldn’t wait and turned left, the same again from a right hand turn slip lane, but to top it off a car giving way to all the cars coming from the left even though they were turning left and didn’t have to give way to them????
Am I crazy or is everyone else on the roads going crazy?
BTW, end of month is coming up soon, so they better send someone to start marking up where the holes are to be dug or the Chief Minister will look a little foolish.

I love that if you follow the link, you end up on a page that exists a few branches below the heading ‘open government’, yet when it comes to the plans for Florey Drive – Starke St / Southern Cross Drive, there was nothing open about it. We’ve gone from plans to install a roundabout on each intersection, to plans to put lights on the Florey Drive intersection, while the traffic at Starke St can fend for itself.

I love how the Chief Minister announces this plan with no reference to the past, and the fact that they’re going for ‘Plan B’, which may well improve safety at Florey Drive, while making Starke St far more dangerous.

I love how if you try to use any of the ‘Community Engagement’ pages that are available from that page, that a search for ‘Florey Drive’ returns no relevant results. I even went to http://www.act.gov.au and did the same search, and had no results at all. TAMS just heads to the same announcement that I’ve linked to before.

So ‘Open Government’ huh Katy? Announcing roundabouts, before erasing any history of that announcement and replacing it with the new and inferior ‘make Florey Drive safer and f*** Starke St even more than it already is’ plan, with no community consultation or opportunity for anyone to have their say is somehow ‘open government’?

I’d hate to see your version of closed government…

Also yesterdayhad a nutter P plater think it was ok to turn right out of Florey Drive and then sit in the intersection to wait for traffic heading west along Southern Cross Drive, of course blocking the right hand turn into Florey Drive. If that P platter is reading the right thing to do is to wait behind the line next to the give way sign until it is safe to do your turn without stopping IN the intersection. The sign is there for a reason!
