Rollerskate in the city needs your support!

rollerskate

A lunchtime observer of Roller Skate In The City in Garema Place has much to ponder.

One wonders at the lack of a hand rail at a roller rink, why the letters CBD have been embossed metre high onto the skating surface, and where all those disco balls have been hiding up until now?

Deeper questions arise, such as whether the padding lashed to the lamp post in the middle of the skating area adheres to any particular code or standard? And why an un-padded garden umbrella is out there next to the lamp post?

But most of all the passing lunchtime observer wonders where all the people are?

In any event, have no fear of not being able to get a spot on the rink.

Walking past today I noticed that the vendor is spraying water into a fan, which then blows onto the skating surface? Thats enough to keep me away.

A failure. I knew it

If the pricing is anywhere near as prohibitive as the ice rink in the same location was, I daresay they won’t attract much custom.

Really I thought the pricing for the ice rink was perfectly ok. I went a few times. The skating rink probably has less novelty though. Still I think ideas like this are good for the city, unless we just want a highrise there instead.

Does anyone know what kind/brand of surface they are using and where it came from?

geesh, at least give it a week before making that call. If I remember rightly the days sessions of the ice skating were fairly quiet.

I keep meaning to ask them if you can use your own skates and how much it is in that case (it’s not mentioned on any signs)

There are two respondents to this thread that appear to be ‘only happy when it rains’ (For two points, see if you can gues who they are!). Probably related to this: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-11-21/act-twitter-users-study-depressed/3683652 ;-)

CBD: Complete bloody debacle.

I think the problem is that you can skate anywhere, as there is no shortage of ground, whereas the ice-rink provided something in short supply.

It’s nice to pretend to be an economist once a year.

One thing that would stop me from going on that is the dodgy surface that they have laded down for the flooring, small squares of plastic placed together like a jigsaw puzzle. Even a friend of mine asked if that was meant to be the flooring even he didn’t think it looked safe

Just a general feeling that I should ruin something for someone else on for no other reason than Im not gaining anything from it. Are you new to canberra?

Canberra’s roller skaters? They’re there. Every one of them.

I think its $12.50 per adult, but yeah the ice skating made a lot more sense. I might give this a go, I’d have thought skate hire near the lake might have been a good idea?!?!?
Really though garema place is too small for a town square like feel, which this would be good for. If they didn’t keep selling out to developers we could have had a nice open public space in the centre of the city……

We went today and were the only ones there for our session which was good as my kids (5 & 3) spent most of the time running around in their socks. I found the lack of a hand rail was a problem along with the uneven surface.

If they had a flat section with a rail for beginners I think that would have helped us.

Ice skating was a much better experience for us and might leave skating for a few more years.

It would be great to have a permanent inline hockey surface somewhere. There used to be a rink in Hume a few years ago but that disappeared. I know the surface is still around in storage, maybe convert that foosball stadium near the lake into a rink for some inline hockey!

I used to skate in Garema Pl but nobody ever asked me for money our tried to get me to use a special rink.

Anyway the kids are skateboarding these days. When I heard about this, that’s what I assumed it was.

Ooh, am i one of them? I was just trying to find out why someone would want to close down such an activity? It’s not my cup of tea, i did take the kids to the ice skating one & they enjoyed it though. But i don’t actively want to close it down. Why would you?

I miss the giant Chess-set that used to be where the goon-bag is now, anyone else remember?

Someone surprised at the lack of people in Canberra during January? You’re new in town, aren’t you?

Perhaps if they set up the rink in Batemans Bay (Little Canberra By the Sea) they might get a few more customers.

I hope they stay – I noticed they were being allowed to park their cars there – never one to pass up the opportunity, I parked mine there for two hours the other day and got away with it … still planning to park at the Tent Embassy during the week – I’ll report back on that one! : )
