A reader asks:

My daughter has recently inherited an old Janome sewing machine. Can anyone suggest somewhere she can learn to use the sewing machine? There used to be a place a Phillip where you could take your machine and learn the basics. Does this still exist?

Stitches of Canberra in Philip are good.
Any of the specialist sewing machine dealers will do lessons. I’d suggest sewing machine dealers rather than places who mainly sell fabric, doing courses and sell machines as a kind of side thing.

Try Hobbysew in Belconnen, and maybe even Addicted to Fabric in Phillip – they have a fantastic range of fabrics too!

Keep in mind any learn to sew class doesn’t teach you how to use the machine. What model is it?

The Makers Collective runs all sorts of great workshops for adults including a sewing for beginners one – http://themakerscollective.com.au/workshop/sewing-for-beginners-drawstring-bags/ Its also just a great creative space to hang out and learn new skills. The place in Philip is Addicted to Fabric who also run sewing classes but often with more of a quilting focus (also the best fabric shop in Canberra) – http://www.a2f.com.au/Workshops.

Hi there – I run a children’s sewing school called The Magic Needle in Farrer for kids aged 6 and up. I have machines here for the kids to learn on but am also happy for them to bring their own if they have them so I can show them how to use their specific model. Have a look at the studio and lesson options here and feel free to give me a call or email from the contact page: http://www.themagicneedle.com.au/

Sew Simple in Phillip, which is the one in Altree Court, they are a Janome dealer. Hobbysew might have some classes or be able to put you onto a teacher. Her best bet is to go through the manual step by step to learn how to use its features using some cotton poplin.

the sewing shop in altree court woden should be able to help you. they give classes to newbies and people who buy overlockers etc. can’t remember its name though.

CIT definitely do basic learn to sew courses at a number of locations around Canberra. Canberra Sewing in Phillip also run courses from basic sewing to pattern-making, quilting etc

CIT might run them as part of their ‘Short Courses’ offering.
