Short + Sweet

The worlds largest short play festival returns to Canberra for its 5th year.

Short + Sweet features 30 short plays. There are no rules regarding the content of the plays, the only rule is that they must be under 10 minutes.

The result is always a bit of a roller-coaster of entertainment. Some plays are awful, but some are excellent.

They are all short. Love or hate them they are quickly done, then you are flung forwards into the next piece. Nothing overstays its welcome and there’s always this bit of excitement over what comes next.

I quite like it.

Aiming to develop new and emerging theatre artists, Short+Sweet showcases the outstanding pool of artists working in the local theatre community and exposes them to a new audience.

A rich local content base has generated a record number of entries for this year’s festival and with 22 of the plays chosen written in the ACT, the Capital’s thriving culture climate will be well represented. Whether the audience are eight or eighty, Short+Sweet delivers something for everyone including comedy, drama, physical, puppetry, poetic, absurd – the only requirement is the play must be ten minutes or less!

Short+Sweet Canberra 2013 is created by Festival Director, Kate Gaul whose impressive track record as a theatre director and teacher brings a wealth of experience to Canberra.

“I’m very excited to be working with ACT actors, directors, writers to create the festival,” said Gaul. “The ACT Theatre scene is incredibly vibrant with a host of companies and theatre artists already creating some wonderful, innovative and engaging theatre.”
