Simon Corbell (the Lord of the Photo Ops) has announced two new “Ur-Bin” loaders have joined the garbage truck fleet:

“These two new garbage disposal trucks are designed to collect more rubbish than their predecessors while making sure that those who use them remain as safe as possible,” Mr Corbell said.

“Our vehicles service the City, shopping centres, sportsgrounds and district parks so the increased capacity, safer bin lifts and higher compaction, are highly welcome features of the new trucks.

“It is timely that these new trucks join the fleet of existing waste disposal vehicles, and will replace trucks that are more than 18 years old and have reached the end of their operational life.”

The vehicles have a capacity of eight cubic metres or the equivalent of rubbish from 400 household garbage bins – which is 100 more bins than the old trucks could carry.

The vehicles currently service about 800 bins on an average week across Canberra.

Mr Corbell said the innovative design removed the need for roof access on the trucks as well as technology for faster and more efficient rubbish compaction.

“The new trucks feature premium lighting and safety features such as an emergency stop, a high pressure cleaner, rear search lamps and a tailgate safety check valve.

I think the burning issue here is why is a senior government Minister officially launching two garbage trucks? Surely there are more pressing matters of public interest that this media tart could be addressing than the expansion of the Territory’s garbage truck fleet.

Will these trucks have NO WASTE BY 2010 painted on them ?

The trucks currently have a capacity of around 300 household bins, yet only service about 800 bins per week?
Either someone got their figures badly wrong, or these trucks are terribly under utilised.

Read the line that says “Our vehicles service the City, shopping centres, sportsgrounds and district parks……..”. Most bins in the city and shopping centres require emptying a couple of times a day.
