Last year Canberra’s temporary ice rink saw almost 20,000 visitors lace up a pair of boots and give it a go, while plenty more visitors (like me) were happy to sit on the sidelines at watch.

This year Canberra CBD Limited hope to do even better with the Skate in the City 2013, which officially opens at 8pm tonight.

Canberra CBD Limited’s CEO Jane Easthope is a bit excited.

“After much anticipation the rink is ready for action. Anyone wanting to try their hand at ice skating should come down and give it a go.”

Be entertained by the glamorous Friday night Fashion Parade on Ice presented by the Canberra Centre. Nightly skate sessions have a Top 40 dance party atmosphere. On Sundays enjoy a wonderful cultural experience at the rink as Canberra celebrates its multiculturalism.

One and a half hour skate sessions; 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm, 8pm; Friday and Saturday nights also have a 10pm session; Note: Friday 28th June starts at 8pm.

A big thanks to Sarah Batey, Brianna Steggall, Callum Bradshaw and Anastasia Bradshaw for braving the weather and putting on a show for the photographers.

Last year it wasn’t the entertainment that was entertainment – it was one of my funniest 90 minutes of the year! Suffice to say, Canberrans aren’t great skaters generally, but it was great to see people having a go. A big of an adrenaline rush as well, as skaters careened all over the rink at various speeds, directions and attitudes! Highly recommended!

I will never grasp the penguin of shame again…I will never skate.

Thought it was a bit expensive last year – 1.5hr sessions is too long for younger kids. They need a ‘taster session’ – say 1/2hr for 1/2 the price.

Still, if 20,000 people did it last year I may not be in the majority
