The Liberals Brendan Smyth has finally responded to Friday’s news that ACTEW are appealing the ICRC determination on water price rises:

The Canberra Liberals are calling for answers after ACTEW made an application to the ICRC to review its water and sewerage price determination made on June 26 Shadow Treasurer, Brendan Smyth said today.

“This comes off the back of ACTEW’s $80.3 million after-tax profit in the 2012-13 financial year and Canberrans have the right to demand answers,” Mr Smyth said.

“Earlier this year, we saw Canberra households having to pay five percent more for their water just to keep ACTEW afloat. This was after the ICRC’s original proposal to decrease water bills by nearly 17 percent.

“It’s been over a month since the Budget debates, and the fact that Canberrans are still left in the lurch on the impacts of the ICRC price determination on the ACT’s bottom line, is unacceptable.

“This is compounded with last month’s independent review that uncovered 40 opportunities where ACTEW governance could be improved.

“Now we see ACTEW appealing the umpire’s decision and asking to charge even more”, Mr Smyth concluded.

Only the homeowning households Brendan. You might want to bear in mind renters and public housing tenants if you ever want to win an election.

What the? I don’t see any references making distinctions between home owners and renters anywhere in Brendan’s reply. We all pay for water anyway, whether it is directly or indirectly through rent, nothing is free in this world, not even air anymore.

Don’t renters pay for water? Am I missing something (as usual!)? 😛
