Stanhope warns that he really, really is going to shut down the Belconnen Bus Interchange

It’s a fact of life that a large part of the population (60%?) really do live under a rock.

Once you account for those short on time, short on english, or just understandably short of patience with the ACT body politic, it’s amazing anyone pays any attention at all.

But when one is turfing a huge chunk of the commuting public out of a dingy but functional bus interchange to literally put them out on the streets it begins to dawn on even the most high handed politician that there might be some repercussions.

To that end Mr Stanhope is once again trying to get the message out about what he’s doing to the public transport users of Belconnen.

From Monday 25 May, bus services through the Belconnen Town Centre will stop at two temporary bus stations on Cameron Avenue and Lathlain Street and a third permanent bus station on Cohen Street. New ACTION bus timetables will also commence on 25 May.

ACTION will run bus familiarisations tours at the Belconnen Bus Interchange this week to allow patrons to become familiar with the new arrangements. Tours will operate on Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 May every 30 minutes from 10 am to 2pm. Tours will depart from Platform 16. There is no need to book…

“As part of these improvements the Belconnen Bus Interchange will be decommissioned on Monday to allow for the extension of Cohen Street.

“From Monday bus services through the Belconnen Town Centre will stop at stations on Cameron Avenue, Lathlain Street and Cohen Street.”

Bear in mind that this carnage has meant another re-work of the bus timetables.

sometimes basic mayoral duties come back to bite

it’s much easier to have press conferences about public ‘art’ and empty ‘human rights’ motels than basic services and infrastructure

They had better hurry up, as they are still putting up bus shelters and resurfacing the walkways on Cohen St…

Sounds a bit like the so-called “temporary deficit” which will last until 2015. Also the so-called “temporary classrooms” which were installed at my old primary school in Sydney in 1969 and which are still there today.
