'Start-Up' grants announced for 2011

Chief Minister Stanhope has announced the winners of the “Start-Up” grants for young artists.

“Young artists can face a number of barriers when establishing their arts practice, most particularly in relation to the costs of buying materials, hiring a venue or staging a production,” Mr Stanhope said.

“The $500 ‘Start-Up’ grants will give young artists some of the early support they need to develop their ideas, build audiences, and pursue professional development.”

The lucky winners are:

    — James Batchelor – to assist with costs of purchasing a digital camera to make a short
    dance film

    — George Edwards – to assist with costs of art materials and equipment hire to create a wall
    animation for a public mural

    — Timothy Guthrie – to assist with costs of server fees and maintenance of a website
    ‘Dream Damage’ about the Canberra underground music scene

    — Benjamin Harris – to assist with costs of video editing software and an external hard drive
    to produce a short film Tasty for public screening

    — Fiona Little – to assist with costs of the production and presentation of abstract
    drawings and paintings for exhibition

    — Claire Low – to assist with costs of master classes in writing at and membership of
    the ACT Writer’s Centre to produce a novel

    — Dorothy Peisley – to assist with costs of equipment and materials to establish a jewellery
    designer studio practice

    — Luke Penders – to assist with costs of preparing prints and video projections for an
    exhibition in a disused public space

    — Catherine Petocz – to assist with costs of touring an installation interactive performance
    work, initially at the Wagga Art Gallery
    — Alison Plevey – to assist with costs of purchasing video camera equipment to film and
    document choreographic work

    — Luke Sweeting – to assist with costs of producing a debut CD on improvised jazz piano

    — Bridget Thomas – to assist with costs of creating new glass work for an exhibition at the
    Canberra Glassworks

    — Lachlan Thomas – to assist with costs of recording and producing original indie music
    album, available for downloading

    — Adam Veikkanen – to assist with costs of venue costs for an art exhibition focused on the
    role of community in suburbia

    — Fiona Veikkanen – to assist with costs of purchasing an overlocker to make sculptural
    artworks for an exhibition
