Street trees v. Arboretum - round two

Zed Seselja seems to think he’s onto a winner on the matter of street trees for everyone vs street trees for the Chief Minister’s special tree park on the edge of nowhere.

Leader of the Opposition, Zed Seselja, has announced the Canberra Liberals will bring a motion forward in the Assembly to call on the Government to prioritise funding for the street trees program ahead of the Arboretum.

This comes after budget papers reveal the ACT Labor has plundered street trees by slashing $10 million from the program.

“The Canberra Liberals believe that replacing trees in our suburbs, improving Canberra’s streetscapes and keeping the environment that Canberrans love, should be prioritised above Jon Stanhope’s Arboretum,” Zed said.

It’s an interesting way to govern a territory with spending decisions being constantly changed by the legislature. (If the Greens back the motion)

Here’s the poll we’ve been running on this since 21 May.

Hey, at least we will have some trees ready for the next bushfire. It’s a pity that it will be at the expense of the rest of the city.

More detail please- is this $10 million a one-year hit, or is it spread over four years (this year plus three years of forward estimates? and what is the total street trees program budget worth?

The Arboretum is a waste of taxpayers’ money. It is just another memorial to Jon Stanhope, like all the other things he puts his name to. One of the worst cases was the bushfire memorial which mentioned his name several times, but did not name any of the people who died. It was left to the bushfire community to put up a plaque honouring them, the volunteer firefighters and all those who helped to ease the pain.

JB – Zed’s gotta be on a winner when RA calls it the ‘special tree park on the edge of nowhere’

I’m leaving this alone, I was accused of having a small penis last time I said the arbouretum was a good idea

is the Arboretum the restaurant at the new Foreshores Marina?

(boom tish. Thank you, thank you, I’m here ripping off BBC radio panel shows all night)

The arboretum was a lovely idea, there’s lots of benefit in planting trees.

But the whole point of Canberra is that you don’t have to leave town to enjoy nature, so they’d better make sure there are trees in streets first!

Whilst I don’t agree with the slashing of the budget for street trees…what has this got to do with the arboretum?

Both are worthwhile..as I look at the wasted monies on the dog play area near my home that noone uses.
