Here’s one for you foodies:

Bookings are now open for the 18th Symposium of Australian Gastronomy which will be held at Old Parliament House, Canberra, from Friday 13 to Monday 16 May 2011. You can register now at http://gastronomers.org/register

The theme for the symposium is The Federation of Taste which aims to explore the implications of governance past and present for gastronomy in Australia. The papers are certain to be both enlightening and entertaining. There will be six sessions which will provide a good opportunity for the speakers to present their papers to address the broad theme. The sessions are:

— A Good Constitution;
— Revolutionaries;
— The heritage of absence;
— Federated by food;
— Place and taste; and
— Food futures

Robyn Archer AO will open the symposium proceedings on Friday evening with a welcome reception followed by a debate titled Liberty, Equality and Food: Making the Revolution, moderated by Alan Saunders.

The program is a delight for the senses – from the Autumnal Chestnut Harvest Roast lunch, to the Symposium Banquet in the Members’ Dining Room, to the picnic lunch in the Senate Rose Gardens, to the Chocolatiers Tea Party, to the ‘Mysterious Journey’ and Dinner with the Stars.

In accordance with tradition of symposia past, the symposium will close with a farewell breakfast – in the Old Parliament House heritage kitchens this time – where bids will be sought for a host for the next symposium. You can read more about the program here http://gastronomers.org/program

This symposium builds on a long history. The first Symposium of Australian Gastronomy was held in Adelaide in 1984 and has been held every 18 months or so since then, with the 25th anniversary symposium held in Adelaide in 2009. The Australian symposia are based on the Oxford Symposium on Food and Cookery which is an educational charity with the prime objective of fostering and encouraging exploration of food history as a serious topic of research.
