By 25 September 2014

I’m looking at having National Patios build me a new deck and would appreciate any experience you may have had with them. Thanks!

Cricket Nets

By 25 September 2014

Hello again.
Just wondering if anyone knows of any cricket practise nets close to Gordon?
I know there are some in Chisolm but thats a bit far to travel.

Playground at Eddison Park

By 25 September 2014

Does anyone know what’s going on with the playground at Eddison Park?  There is little playground which is great for young children (toddlers) at the skate-park end of the park.  I went a few times through the winter and parts of it seemed to be roped off (it looked like the soft flooring was disintegrating) [...]

Health and Safety responsibility vs stupidity

By 25 September 2014

I was driving along Hindmarsh Drive yesterday morning and noticed the red light camera at the Parkway intersection being fixed.  A guy in a high vis vest up a high ladder fixing the camera with a spanner (I assume) in one hand, as the other held a cigarette.  If this guy falls off, who is [...]

Unauthorised Building Contract Changes

By 24 September 2014

I would appreciate some informed opinion about a legal matter please.
We have a building contact for a new home that we signed a while ago. The contract went through several revisions. We recently found out that there were some allowances in the original version that were later dropped. Neither our solicitor nor [...]

Denial about problem gambling – successful approaches?

By 24 September 2014

There would be many Canberrans with experience of living with a problem gambler — specifically the type who is in complete denial and engages in all the classic deceptions, such as hiding the fact that he is even patronising licensed clubs, and spinning concocted stories about why he needs to withdraw substantial sums of money from [...]

Floriade Disappointing

By 24 September 2014

My first ever visit to Floriade last weekend. It took me longer to find a parking spot than to see all that Floriade had to offer. Seriously, is this Canberra’s main event?
Others have told me that each year, the flower displays dwindle  and the over-priced food stalls grow.
Over-hyped and over-rated.

Basketball Backboard

By 22 September 2014

Rather ironically my “lifetime” freestanding basketball system’s backboard has broken ie the perspex sheet.  To be fair the thing is about ten years old so was bound to happen at some point.
I have contacted the company but while the part is worth $50 the postage is over $500! Also had no success looking on eBay [...]

Recommendations for painter and decorator

By 21 September 2014

Can anyone give me a good recommendation for a painter to paint the inside of my house? I want someone who is careful and thorough with their work and can recommend the right paint and colours for the various areas of the house. Eg wet areas etc… and cleans up thoroughly after themselves and is [...]

Road rage on Monaro today almost killed us

By 20 September 2014

My partner and I are very lucky to be alive this afternoon….
At approx 3:10pm this afternoon, we experienced horrific road rage directed at us on the Monaro Hwy. It happened in the direction going from Civic to Hume about 1km or so of the Alexander Maconochie Centre. An “electric blue” coloured ute (pretty sure it was [...]

Missing dog

By 20 September 2014

One One went missing midday on the 19th from Franklin. She is very shy, but an extremely sweet girl. We are very frightened for her. If you have any knowledge of her whereabouts, please call Caitlin on 0400158765.

Reward.

Isle of Man TT style race for Canberra / region?

By 20 September 2014

I’ve been reflecting on recent RA posts about events in Canberra (i.e whether or not Canberra is a boring place), and this prompted me to think what sort of event would put our fair city on the world stage.
Now, we already have Floriade and Summernats, the Balloon and Folk Festivals, various NGA exhibitions, the CIRC 24 [...]

State/Territory Mutual Recognition fails again

By 19 September 2014

Today I received my renewal notice for my NSW Recreational Fishing License which has risen 17% to $35.00 for 12 months. They must be using the same rating formula as ACT Revenue.
An equivalent license in the ACT does not exist (yet) but my favourite fishing spot is in NSW and ACT residents are not exempted from [...]

Home security revisited

By 18 September 2014

It’s been a few years since the matter of home security systems was discussed and, since I am currently poised to jump ship with the company I’ve been with for more than 10yrs (ADT) and switch to one about which I know very little (Chubb), it seemed a perfect time to ask what people’s experience has [...]

Queuing at Centrelink

By 17 September 2014

I haven’t noticed before, but it seems that service providers (Centrelink, Canberra Connect, banks etc) have their personnel patrol queues or “greet customers” in place of getting a queue ticket. On the surface this seems very reasonable.  However when I went to Centrelink Braddon about a letter threatening to suspend or cancel my 90 yo mother’s pension, the “greeter” [...]

By 16 September 2014

Hi,
Does anyone know any good lawyers or accountants in the ACT for small business? A friend of mine is looking to acquire a business she is working at and just needs a nice solicitor to handle the takeover and an accountant to deal with the business going forward.
Thanks for your help.

Looking to replace my toilet suites

By 15 September 2014

Hello.
Just wondering whether anyone has used Female Choice Plumbing for plumbing work and installing toilet suites? I need to replace my toilets (3 of them) and would like  someone who can replace these at a good price. Any other suggestions of companies to  do this?

Renting and Residual Current Devices

By 15 September 2014

I rent a property in NSW. My land lord has not fitted a Residual Current Device to the power board. I have read lots of information online about how they are compulsory in work places, how they are compulsory under the Occupational Health and Safety Amendment (Residual Current Devices) Regulations 2011 and the Wiring Rules [...]

End-of-lease cleaner recommendations

By 12 September 2014

Hi,
Can anyone recommend a reliable and reasonably priced end-of-lease cleaner in the ACT/QBN region?
Thanks.

Something happening at Cooleman Court – 6 police cars suddenly turned up

By 10 September 2014

It looks like something reasonably serious has happened at Cooleman Court today, out the front of Kusina restaurant.
As I was leaving the carpark there, I saw multiple police vehicles with their lights on, haphazardly pulled up in front of the restaurant and police were taking statements from people (who I thought looked quite shocked).
In another [...]

Bonner Explosion

By 10 September 2014

Hi,
Did anyone hear the multiple explosions last night at 11pm in Bonner? Just curious as to what it was.

North, ICBM and Meche closes its doors

By 9 September 2014

I was out for dinner Saturday night and walked past the famous night club strip on Northboure Ave to notice that iconic bar Meche (The old Private Bin), ICBM and North Bar are all up for lease.
After some investigation I was loosely informed that the owner of the bar had a dispute with the Sydney [...]

Roofing – Replace Tiles with Colourbond

By 9 September 2014

I am looking at replacing our tired and cracking tiled roof with Colourbond. I have recieved two quotes which are reasonably comparable.
One quote came from a small business: Simply Guttering and Roofing.
The second came from WR Engineering.
I am hoping people can let me know if anyone has either positive or negative comments about either of these [...]

Recommendation for building designer or architect

By 4 September 2014

Hi all,
Have seen some older posts with recommendations but after some up to date info?
My husband and I are thinking about an extension to our house and would be doing it as owner builders (getting in tradies for lots of parts but essentially project managing it ourselves) and I’m after some recommendations of building designers or [...]

Graffiti and how to stop it

By 4 September 2014

Is there anyone in Canberra who can tell me how to remove graffiti from a colourbond fence?  I spent 3yrs saving up for a large fence which backs on to a main street only to have it pristine for 6mths. Then the animals defaced it (they are too awful to be called artists).  As the [...]

Yeehah – western gear

By 3 September 2014

Greetings Rednecks, Bootscooters and Good Old Boys, where can I buy some kick a^*e western gear (as in clothes) in Canberra? Not just ya basic checks and jeans but something with a bit of Kinky Freedman style. Hope y’all can set me mozyin in the right direction.

Gas bill – Conversion Factor

By 3 September 2014

ActewAGL suddenly changed our Conversion Factor from about 0.6 to 0.9 and claims that all of a sudden we are using about 60% more Units than our previous bill (even though someone moved out of our place 3 months ago and was not replaced).
ActewAGL have reissued an old bill and a issued new one which [...]

Political dilemmas

By 2 September 2014

As a person who likes to be involved in my community, and indeed am, politics has become quite a frustration for me lately.
I feel really compelled to join a particular political party on a federal level – happy to disclose, the ALP – because I am completely unimpressed with the various agendas of the other [...]

New wardrobe cupboards
Removal of old carpet and installation of new flooring (floating timber floors)
Kitchen/Bathroom renos (incl. floor and wall tiling)

Looking for a solo musician to hire for art exhibition opening

By 1 September 2014

Hi everyone,
I’m planning an open night for an art exhibition and thought a musician would be a great addition.
Space is limited, hence the single musician. Perhaps a classical guitarist, cellist or someone who can play melodious, classy yet unobtrusive music and has good vocals, for an intimate venue.
I’m relatively new to Canberra and as such [...]

Secretive development of parks

By 1 September 2014

The recent hoo-ha over the development of the park outside dickson pool has brought up a good question. How to inform locals about development of their green spaces?
Residential developments are flagged with the little yellow sign outside the house. Neighbours will see it and have a look.
But to flag a green-space development with a tiny [...]

Queanbeyan Cinema – more red tape

By 30 August 2014

Hi Rioters,
Unsure if you’ve been following the epic drama over the border in Queanbeyan.
In a nutshell, we’ve been clamouring for a cinema for 18 years, and it’s come to the boil for the last 6 months. Over this 6 month period, council has been provided with an opportunity and a space to build [...]
