Our first look – Vincent

Barton’s newest wine bar and restaurant is not one that I found easy to find. From the street all that can be seen is big windows covered in dark shutters with virtually no signage. After calling them to find out where to go we realised it next door to Little Bird, in the same new [...]

Cheap Eats: The Forage

Performance at The Forage

Somehow, until a few weekends ago, I had never been to The Forage. But now that I have been, I am keen to go back – I will have to wait, though, as The Forage is only held around once every three months.

The Forage has been at various venues in Canberra, including New Acton and an [...]

First Look: Buvette

Adding to the small amount of French eateries in Canberra, Buvette has become Hotel Realm’s latest culinary establishment. The bistro opened its doors at the start of December last year, and showcases exquisite French classics with the finest local produce. The space, (which has taken over what was once Mavi, and Konoba) has a dark, [...]

Cheap Eats – Double Drummer (Barton)

As mentioned in previous weeks and the call-out for Canberra Cheap Eats last week, I’ve been keen to branch out of Civic and try some ‘unknown’ eateries. One suggestion received was Double Drummer in Barton. I work close to Barton and had never even heard of this place so I was excited to check it [...]

By 14 October 2015 HEADLINE ARTICLE
Ask RiotACT

Recently the ACT Government put out a flyer about road changes coming for the Gungahlin area. Amongst these was the proposal to signalise the large roundabout at the intersection of the Barton Highway, William Slim and Gundaroo Drives.
Does anyone else think that putting traffic lights on the roundabout is a half-baked solution and that the [...]

A Look around Canberra: Barton

By 9 October 2015 HEADLINE ARTICLE
A Look Around Canberra: Barton

The suburb of Barton in Canberra’s inner south has one of the smallest suburb populations, if not the smallest, in Canberra. However, according to ABS data, Barton was once the most socio-economic advantaged suburb in Australia. Much of this can be put down to the fact that the majority of residents are likely to be [...]

Weekend cafe hot spot: Maple + Clove, Barton

Last weekend we had some friends stay at Hotel Realm, so when it came time for breakfast it was a choice between the hotel buffet or Maple + Clove. I had heard a lot about Maple + Clove – it’s a wholefoods café marketed as honest, nourishing and above all, delicious natural goodness to power [...]

Good food in Barton?

By 23 January 2013

Rhetorical question really. Quite a few good cafes although many are hidden in office blocks.
But a few months ago Pride of Asia opened on the corner of National Circuit and Bligh St, opposite the Hotel Kurrajong. This place is fantastic. Good cheap tasty Asian food, with a choice of four premade hot dishes plus [...]

Monarch or Realm?

By 5 November 2011

A friend is very interested in a couple of flats (or units, or apartments as they’re called now), one in The Monarch, Turner, and the other in Realm, Barton.
Other than the grandiose names, does anyone know what these developments are like, building-quality wise? Noisy? Minimal meth-labs? Stuff breaking down?
Any scuttle-butt (or praise) would be useful [...]

APS department paying its employees’ FBT?

By 16 August 2011

I was told by an APS colleague today that his (1000+) department in Parkes/Barton actually pays the parking-equivalent FBT for its employees, who have free parking both underground and in a boom-gated carpark.
There is $7 a day parking within 200m. Is this private-enterprisish subsidy part of the bargaining arrangements?
They don’t appear to [...]

*I mean the proper two [...]
