The Festive and giving season is over and we are into the New Year and its resolutions.
Two happenings now occur. The telephone stops ringing and the post stops delivering appeals from charities. If you listen carefully you can hear 2016 resolutions being broken all over Canberra.
What these two occurrences have in common is that [...]
We have just had a huge wardrobe cleanout and have everything from brand new items still with tags through to much-worn things. Mr Catty says charities won’t take any clothing and it’s a waste of time taking them. He wants to take them all to the tip, but my scruples won’t let me; there are [...]
It appears that my job will be relatively safe after the budget but that may not be the same for everyone in the ACT. I am pretty much aware that not everyone is on the big dollars and am thinking about changing the charities I donate to so I can ensure that more of my [...]
The Canberra Times is carrying a chorus of idiots criticizing some very sensible regulation of charity barbecues.
This supposedly onerous regulation is requiring organisations that conduct more than five fundraising bbqs a year get a $150 certification to make sure at least one of them knows what the hell they are doing.
The Chamber of Commerce’s Andrew [...]

If you feel like a challenge and enjoy the adventure of the open road, then you’ll love this awesome ride. Commencing on August 18, riders from all around Australia are heading to the Red Centre to raise community awareness of depression and suicide prevention. The final leg of the journey on [...]
Simon Corbell has announced some certainty for charities working to reduce landfill worried by looming fees.
The new landfill fee waivers for charity groups will come into effect from 1 January 2012 and will be granted to organisations that provide resource recovery services in the ACT and do not receive government funding for providing those services.
RiotACT Core Command watched the Melbourne Cup from Honkytonks on Garema Place. There was beer, conversation, fascinating women in fascinators, some sort of horse race, and… oh my… Chugger Watching.
From a safe position and with drinks to hand it’s the ultimate bloodsport!
She’s moving in for the kill, she’s got eye contact, she’s gotten hold of [...]
We’ve had a few stories about chuggers – Charity Muggers.
As more charities realise the practice gives them a solid revenue stream for no upfront cost (but a huge amount of charitable giving going to chugger contracting companies) they seem likely to become ever more verminous.
Is this a normal part of life in a big city [...]
In an announcement no Minister wanted to be associated with Territory and Municipal Services have flown a kite on making charities pay the same landfill fees as the rest of us to “help” them reduce waste:
The ACT Government is to begin consulting with charity organisations and industry over a review of charity landfill fee waivers [...]
I would like to try to start some volunteer work around Canberra but don’t know quite where to start, so I am turning to you.
This isn’t completely altruistic; I sit alone inside all day for work, so I’d like to be able to work outdoors or with other people, or preferably both! I’m open to [...]
So for the umpteenth time in a number of weeks I have been approached by a charity organisation out on the street, coaxed into a conversation and then encouraged to sign my life away in an attempt for them to extract regular donations from me.
It would seem that charities are becoming more and more competitive in [...]
