One new light show at the City Walk fountain and one less info booth in Garema Place

By 1 May, 2013

That big diamond looking fountain on City Walk has a new set of pretty colours to delight passers by. I have always had a bit of a soft spot for light shows, so I’m all for it.
Check it out in the video above.
The daily show rotates with colours depicting ‘rainbow’, fire and water.
On Valentine’s Day [...]

Ice Skating returning to CBD

By 23 April, 2013

Canberra CBD Limited’s ‘Skate in The City’ 2013 is on the way!
I’ve never actually gotten up on the ice myself, but I wander through Garema Place every day and adore seeing it all prettied up. The ice, the lights, the skaters, the fact that the music seems to be Billie Jean on repeat.
It’s pretty great.
Skate [...]

What happened to the (in)famous Landmark Cafe?

By 22 November, 2012

I walked past the Landmark Cafe yesterday (Wednesday) and saw that the business was closed, and for sale.
Does anyone know more about the situation?

How to ruin a chugger’s day!

By 15 August, 2012

Well there has been a drop in the number of chuggers recently but they are still around. I have discovered the best way to get back of them when they take things too far.
About 6 weeks ago I was stopped in Garema Place by a guy representing UNICEF. We had a bit of a chat [...]

Skate in the City going out with Japan-themed Cultural Sunday

By 27 July, 2012

Impact Comics’ ‘Japan Day‘, originally touted as a chance for cosplayers to strut their stuff on ice and win prizes, has now received an upgrade to become less geeky and more family-friendly.
Skate in the City will celebrate its closing day and final “Cultural Sunday” on Sunday (29 July) with Japan having the last hurrah.
Join in [...]

Kissing the steel with the Garema Place bubbler

By 24 July, 2012

Walking through Garema Place this lunchtime I realised that what I’d always assumed to be a bollard was in fact a bubbler.
Does it work? I wondered.
Well. Not at first. But eventually I was able to coax a sad dribble out of it.
And then… it wouldn’t stop.
In terms of making bottled water less appealing there’s still [...]

Cosplay day coming to Skate In The City

By 20 July, 2012

James Fahy has sent in this sweet picture of colour coordinated tradies watching the ice skating in Garema Place.
But in other news Impact Comics have announced on Facebook that the wildly successful ice skating is bringing the curtain down with a Japan Day to include cosplayers on ice.
ATTENTION COSPLAYERS!

Unearthed buskers Woodlock reviewed

By 26 June, 2012

Today I was in Garema place (once again) and I saw this band playing. It’s not uncommon to find local musicians that busk on the side of the street but it’s not every day that you find proper bands playing. Unlike many busking bands, the boys had a sign up stating who they were; Woodlock, [...]

Street art in Garema Place. Glad wrapping poles

By 25 June, 2012

I was walking through Garema Place today and, unsurprisingly, I saw something a bit odd. There was a man just casually wrapping some cling film around two poles outside of Impact Comics. I’ve seen quite a few strange things at Garema and I decided to stick this one out, to see if he was going [...]

What I learned at the Youth Homelessness Matters Day event

By 18 April, 2012

I went down at lunch to see the Youth Homelessness Matters Day event at Garema Place for myself. It was like all of the usual Garema Place events- bands that do Blink 182 and Greenday covers; a coffee van; some BBQ sausages; as well as stalls from organisations relevant to this issue.
Once there, I had [...]

How not to panhandle in Garema Place (or anywhere else).

By 9 April, 2012

Had the unfortunate pleasure of being approached by a bourbon and coke carrying drunk member of the panhandling community this afternoon in Garema Place looking for cash.
When I declined with a sorry no and continued walking he started throwing abuse in a LOUD voice (along the lines of ‘you f*&*&*g   b%$#h c!@t  etc). He [...]

Bashed in Garema Place

By 7 April, 2012

ACT Policing is appealing for witnesses to a robbery in Garema Place, Civic in the early hours of the morning, (Saturday, April 7).
About 12.40 am a man was walking towards King O’Malley’s pub when he was approached by two males. One male, without provocation punched the victim in the head a number of times knocking [...]

Strange protest, sad story

I rarely venture into Garema Place these days, so I don’t know if this has been going on long, but today I came across a protest of sorts – signs and a woman handing out flyers decrying Bradley Allen Lawyers.
The woman is alleging that the firm gave a cost estimate of $20 000 to settle [...]

Rollerskate in the city needs your support!

By 9 January, 2012

A lunchtime observer of Roller Skate In The City in Garema Place has much to ponder.
One wonders at the lack of a hand rail at a roller rink, why the letters CBD have been embossed metre high onto the skating surface, and where all those disco balls have been hiding up until now?
Deeper questions arise, [...]

The Goon Bag makes the Urban Dictionary

By 19 December, 2011

Last week’s much missed intern Ruqi tipped me off that Garema Place’s home of cheap speed and cough medicine, the Goon Bag, has earned itself a listing in the Urban Dictionary:
“The Goon Bag” is a specific location in Garema Place, Civic, Canbera City, Australia. This is a common hang out for alternitive sub-cultures, such as [...]

Rollerskate in the City launches

By 16 December, 2011

Fleetwood Mac were blaring, a painted line marked out a skating area in Garema Place, roller soccer was being perpetrated, Andrew Barr was talking to a camera, yep it must be the launch of Roller Skate In The City.

Canberra CBD have put out a media release with all the details.
Tickets are now on sale for [...]

Chugger bingo in Garema Place. Request for rules suggestions

By 1 November, 2011

RiotACT Core Command watched the Melbourne Cup from Honkytonks on Garema Place. There was beer, conversation, fascinating women in fascinators, some sort of horse race, and… oh my… Chugger Watching.
From a safe position and with drinks to hand it’s the ultimate bloodsport!
She’s moving in for the kill, she’s got eye contact, she’s gotten hold of [...]

How A Sausage Roll Will Save Your Life (this magpie season)

By 21 October, 2011

Schadenfreude
scha•den•freu•de [shahd-n-froi-duh]
Noun
Satisfaction or pleasure felt at someone else’s misfortune.
Magpies are schadenfreuden sunsubitches!
You can see it in their beady little eyes, and as the weather warms up so too does their appetite for causing fear and panic in the streets.
Having spent most of my life being unfairly targeted by these spring demons of the sky, [...]

Honkytonks. New bar in Garema Place

By 15 October, 2011

So last night I had my name on the door for the opening of the new bar on Garema Place, which (in the interests of disclosure) a friend has a stake in.
It’s called Honkytonks, it’s where Mama’s Trattoria used to be, and it’s going to be a bit of thing (at least until the new [...]

The ironbending drunks of Civic

By 9 September, 2011

Civic’s petunia pots appear to be getting filled slowly for the spring.
Along Bunda and Mort Streets there’s nothing, while Garema Place has been done.
But we’ll admit to being mightily impressed by the efforts of drunken vandals to get three metres into the air and twist along Bunda Street.
Garema Place ones do look nice though.
