My family and I are moving to Canberra and would like to find out peoples opinions about Marist and St Edmunds. My son loves his sports but requires a bit more assistance academically. Ideally we would like a school that is big on their sports but also encourages academic excellence as well. In my [...]
If you haven’t been playing along in the aftermath of the weekend’s Marist graduation as reported by an eye witness and a police media release, the response from the students involved has been quite the eye opener.
In the interests of fairness I won’t be summarising but I think you’ll find it worth your time.
ACT Policing were required to respond to numerous incidents of disorderly behaviour and traffic hazards by graduating students from Marist College in Civic early this morning (Sunday, 1 December).
Around 2am police received reports of over 120 students congregated in the Pitts car park, Civic prior to commencing a walk southbound along the Commonwealth Avenue finishing [...]
I felt a bit like David Attenborough at around 2 am last night as I got to witness the annual migration of the graduating students of Marist College from Civic to Woden.
I watched in awe as this 100 – 200 strong group of mainly intoxicated young men in varying stages of undress rampaged through [...]
The ABC has news that the suburb of Cook has had an unexpected visit:
Today detectives have announced another arrest, charging a retired priest with three counts of indecent assault allegedly committed against two victims while he was working at a Marist college in the Hunter Valley in the 1960s and 1970s.
Police say they charged [...]
A call to install a plaque at Marist College Canberra, in remembrance of the victims of sexual abuse at the college over a period spanning three decades, has been rejected by the school.
Nicholas Quaine, himself a former student and victim, proposed the plaque as a permanent warning to future generations of students, reminding them that child sexual [...]
The Brumbies have announced that Marist College Pearce has qualified for the ARU Schoolboys Rugby Sevens National Championships on the Gold Coast this coming weekend.
Here’s hoping they find us some more stars!
The ABC brings word of progress in the child sex abuse claims being made against the Marist and Daramalan colleges here in Canberra:
Most of the Daramalan cases are linked to the late Paul Lyons, while the majority of those at Marist relate to Brother John Chute – also known as Brother Kostka – who has [...]
The Canberra Times has been crunching the numbers on all the sex abuse cases coming out of Canberra’s Marist College and are now speculating as to whether it represents a “paedophile ring”.
Canberra Times investigation has found that five known child molesters, four of whom were convicted of child sex offences after leaving the school, [...]
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Canberra and Marist College’s Patrick Mills has made the US NBA’s draft, being picked up by the Portland Trailblazers.
Being picked 55th out of 60 places experts were surprised he dropped so law in the draft, not helped by a recent broken hand. But having made the draft he’s still [...]

Not good news for them.

Now here’s a question for whichever local politicians are not transfixed by fear of pederasts…
Will they allow a school with a history of proven child sexual abuse, and no known body responsible for its continuing behaviour, to continue [...]
In the recent discussion on abuse at Daramalan Mick1965 made a lengthy post about his own experience.
I thought it deserved a wider readership than being buried in the comments, so here it is.
(Warning, not for the faint hearted)
In Primary School (St Thomas Moore’s the St John Vianney’s) I was considered by many to be a [...]
Given the on-going discussion on this forum, comments I’ve received with other Marist Old Boys and broader interest in this case around Australia, I’m considering starting a Marist Canberra Ex-students and Families Association to lobby for an inquiry into Marist during the 1970′s through 1990′s. I think a lobby group of this type would [...]
The ABC reports that John Kostka Chute has been sentenced to two years in jail, and a further twelve months of weekend detention, following his conviction on 19 acts of indecency.
Justice Gray noted that the sentence, which also includes a three-year good behaviour bond (presumably from the time of release), took into account Chute’s age, [...]
I went to a Marist Secondary College in Sydney. One of our feeder schools was in Hunters Hill, and I suspect that that was where Kostka taught restlessheart. Kostka never taught where I was. Restlessheart may well have done secondary there – we produced many lawyers including me.
There was a group of active homosexual students the [...]
The ABC is reporting that John “Kostka” Chute has teared up while apologising to his victims.
The cynic in me is wondering whether it’s a ploy to avoid harsh sentencing.
Marist are trying to use legal loopholes to cause further pain and suffering on the victims of child sexual abuse that occurred in their school for decades. Some say with their full knowledge and tacit approval. The Church is deliberately trying to add salt to some of the nastiest wounds in this small town. Kostka admitted [...]
[Ed. CG has kindly kept us in the loop on this one with further updates on the case from ABC online here]
I have been watching the posts about the Daramalan and Marist College sexual abuse by Paul Lyons and Brother Kostka for some months now. I have been watching the news and reading the reports, [...]
For those of you not playing along at home, we have previously had coverage on this ongoing story here, here, here, and the original story here.
According to this News.com.au article the lawsuit has been filed in the ACT Supreme Court against the Marist College trustees, in which is claimed the school “brushed aside or failed [...]
