What Women Want: An NDIS for women with disability

By 28 November, 2011

The disability support system in both the ACT and Australia wide has long been in need of an overhaul. People with disabilities are often unable to participate in all aspects of life like people without disabilities, because there is not enough care and support available to them.
Nearly 100,000 Australians have already put their hope for [...]

Canberra Chronicle – stopping unwanted deliveries

By 7 September, 2010

[First filed: Sep 6, 2010 @ 9:35]
[Proof drivers can achieve tight groupings over time]
I do not want the Canberra Chronicle delivered.  The only reason it is delivered free is because it makes enough revenue from advertisers to be economically feasible to publish and deliver.
My reasons are: – the cost to cut the trees down, [...]

Dear ABC, was there really only one news story yesterday?

By 15 July, 2010

The ABC was so quiet yesterday I had to manually check their news page to see if the RSS feeds had broken.
But no, it seems the only Canberra news yesterday was a rescue in the Blue Mountains. (Of a Canberran mind you, which is nice)
It’s true, I’m very jealous of the ABC web people with [...]

The Wagga Wagga Daily Advertiser is concerned that Prime’s Wagga news operation is being moved to Canberra:

By 8 June, 2010

[First filed: Jun 7, 2010 @ 8:45]

Dear Canberra Neighbours,
I just found this site, and thought I might let you know that the old wooden Collector Town Creek Bridge (that you cross directly before arriving at the Collector Pumpkin Festival) is being demolished by our local council this month – maybe even this week – bridge [...]

Australia’s pretend capital city

By 19 February, 2010

I found this post in The Backpacker blog on the Sydney Morning Herald site.  The article is about capital cities that suck.  Canberra got an honourable mention.
http://blogs.smh.com.au/travel/archives/2010/02/10_capital_cities_that_suck.html?page=fullpage#comments
I think this person has summed up Canberra pretty damn well!  And as a long time reader of the RiotACT I noticed that this particular post was reminiscent of many posts I [...]

Missing Kambah teen

By 12 October, 2009

The Canberra Times as well as SMH and ninemsn have a story about missing Kambah teen who’s name was finally released today. Brett Fish left his home on Tuesday and hasn’t been seen since.
I won’t rewrite the entire story, his description is there.
I personally know Brett and would love to see him returned [...]

ABC1 weather reports – what’s going on?

By 28 July, 2009

Has anyone else noticed that the ABC1 news presenters are desperately trying to cover up the (quite obvious) fact that Mark Carmody’s weather reports are either pre-recorded, or delivered in another studio?
Tonight, after Virginia’s introduction of “foggy weather” was followed by Mark immediately mentioning the “foggy weather”, VH thanked him after the report for his [...]

When Canberra had two daily papers

By 15 July, 2009

Inside.org.au have a lengthy and intriguing piece on the birth of The Australian in July 1964 when it was being published from Canberra and produced a genuine Canberra edition in competition with the Canberra Times. Ken Inglis’ 1964 vintage review of the paper has a weird love for the writing of Alistair Cooke, but also [...]

Bossing the media – Stanhope style

By 21 May, 2009

[First filed: May 20, 2009 @ 12:17]

The Liberals have come into the possession of a very interesting email and have kindly put together some supporting documentation which they have punted on, we assume not just to us here in the RiotACT bunker. Keep an eye out for who picks up on this, who does not, [...]

The cute WIN reporter is?

By 7 February, 2009

Does anyone know what the name of the new reporter on Win News is?
I saw him a couple of times last week.
He is lush!! … far hotter than the boys WIN and Prime usually provide …

Trouble at the Mill for WIN?

By 7 January, 2009

Samuel Gordon Stewart has a predictably detailed account of trouble with WIN’s broadcast last night.
I saw Jessica Good apologise for transmission issues but can’t say I caught them myself.
Any of our expert readership with more to add?

McKellar man sentenced for ‘opportunistic crime’

By 9 July, 2008

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/07/09/2298724.htm
Another fine example of ACT supreme court sentencing.
This would have been a different outcome in NSW.

What happens next: after a bus hits a pedestrian?

By 8 July, 2008

As I was recently in an accident that involved a bus and a pedestrian does anyone know what happens to bus drivers when this happens? I merely wish to know the process after the fact not to discuss the accident.

Finnegans reunion

By 7 July, 2008

Just Bands has this post from Paul Sweeney (ex Liquid) about a possible reunion/Camp Quality fundraiser for Finnigans, the classic Canberra music venue in the mid/late 90′s. A fantastic idea. If you or someone you know were part of a band that played at Finnigans, please get in touch with Sweens if you’re [...]

Ice, Meth and E soon to be sold by the cops

By 5 July, 2008

ABC recently reported that the laws are being upgraded in the ACT to allow our local police to possess and sell drugs.
It brings our laws into line with other states, allowing officers to buy and sell drugs, without fear of being prosecuted themselves for possessing the illegal substance.
It’s probably surprising they haven’t had this [...]

Best Seafood restaurant in Canberra?

By 5 July, 2008

Hi,
I’d be really grateful for any recommendations on good Canberra seafood restaurants (not takeaway places). A couple that have been recommended are Maestral in Weston and Con’s Seafood in Mawson – has anyone been to them?

ACT National Trust Issues List of Most at Risk Heritage Places

By 4 July, 2008

The ACT National Trust has nominated 18 places they believe possess heritage values and that are at risk from a range of potential impacts incliuding neglect, demolition, drougy, vandalism and poor planning decisions.
The Trusts top three places include:

The Dickson-Lyneham Flats on Northbourne Avenue;
Redwood Forest, Pialligo; and
The Yarralumla Brickworks

Numbers two and three seem pretty straight forward, [...]

Ben Fordham from ACA on Canberra radio

By 4 July, 2008

Ben Fordham from A Current Affair called in to the drive show on 2CC about bailing up Belinda Neal in the carpark.
It’s a bit hypocritical trying to expose someone as a bully by being a bully.
Why would he go to the effort of ringing Canberra talkback if he has nothing to hide?

By 3 July, 2008

This report from the ABC
“University of Canberra (UC) vice-chancellor Stephen Parker has called for a radical shake-up of tertiary education with stronger links between universities and TAFE colleges.

Where are the pet friendly apartments in Canberra?

By 2 July, 2008

I’ve found the posting on pets in apartments facinating, and will be writing to my local member and the Planning Minister about getting the rights of responsible pet owners recognised in the Unit Titles Act. I’ll be pointing to those apartments that have pet friendly policies as an example of why it can work. [...]

By 2 July, 2008

[ 5 July, 2008; 7:00 pm; ] Just a quick note to RAer’s that may not be aware of an interesting seminar to be held this weekend by the Kenja Trust titled “Guilty until proven innocent”. It’s about their late founder Ken Dyers, a decorated WW2 vet, his colorful life and his battles with the legal system to have his communications centers [...]

MP vows to protect election tally room

By 1 July, 2008

ABC online has this story saying that Federal politicians have vowed to protect Canberra’s election tally room, despite the Electoral Commission revealing it is too expensive and no longer needed.
Good on them. The Tally Room is a national institution and should remain.
