NSW right uses bully boy tactics

By 16 February 2015 HEADLINE ARTICLE

The NSW extreme right has once again used its muscle to bully people into doing its bidding. Elected representatives have been coerced and cajoled into toeing the line and putting their support in for an embattled leader.
Sound familiar? I’m not talking about the NSW Labor Party. This is the extreme right of the Liberal Party. [...]

Most loved South Coast beaches: Which is your favourite?

By 22 December 2014 FEATURED ARTICLE
best south coast beaches

With Christmas just around the corner, it’s almost time for Canberrans to make their annual exodus to the South Coast for a good dose of sun, sea and greasy takeaway.
For those new to the Canberra, it’s a strange phenomenon. Tens of thousands of Canberrans drive two-and-a-half hours to “get away from it all”, only to [...]

NSW speeding fine as ACT driver

By 1 February 2013

Ok – mostly rant – but part prayer for a free solution:
During the Christmas holidays I got a speeding fine in Sydney – 70kmh in a 60kmh zone – outside of the double demerits period. A quick search of the NSW RTA website indicates the fine will be waived if it’s a low range offence [...]

Brumbies 23, Waratahs 6! But our star pivot is gone for the season

It wasn’t pretty, and it wasn’t great (Foxsports tells the tale).
But it was a pretty comprehensive thrashing of those bastards from Sydney with nine turncoats turning out in nursery blue.
A special “get cancer and die” to the NSW parents who let their kids stand in the front row and not sit their tubby arses down [...]

Zed wants NSW to fix the King’s Highway

By 13 March 2012

Liberal Leader Zed Seselja is making an unusual foray into NSW politics, calling for them over the border to pay for upgrades to the road mostly used by us Canberrans after a weekend of fatalities on the Kings Highway:
“There have been too many accidents and fatalities on the Kings Highway and
it is high time the [...]

Coastal conveyancing?

By 6 March 2012

We are looking at buying a house on the coast, just wondering if someone here could recommend a conveyancing group, and do you contact them 1st? or get the loan 1st?. I
just don’t know exactly what our next steps should be since I’ve never bought a home here in Australia.
Please help =)

Canberra to joint bid with NSW for the G20 meeting

By 16 January 2012 FEATURED ARTICLE

Chief Minister Gallagher has announced she’s reached an agreement with NSW to jointly bid for the gargantuan G20 summit in 2014 (whereby the leaders of the 20 most powerful countries in the world will all need motorcades and 5 star hotels simultaneously).
“Late last year I wrote to NSW Premier, Mr Barry O’Farrell, proposing that our [...]

Does Canberra need the ACT? [With Poll]

By 22 December 2011 FEATURED ARTICLE

Canberra and the ACT, they’re often treated as if the two are synonymous. Certainly on this site we’re guilty of using the words interchangeably.
Having been established under Section 125 of the Constitution to resolve the Melbourne / Sydney impasse we were unceremoniously dumped into a state of Self Government in 1988 when the Hawke Government [...]

Reflecting a desire to pursue doing something with NSW

By 2 December 2011

Chief Minister Gallagher has announced she’s signed a Memorandum of Understanding with NSW.
She says it heralds “a new era of economic development and service delivery for the people of the ACT and south east NSW”.
What’s it going to do to bring about this “new era”? Hmmmm, there’s this bit:
It reflects the desire to pursue [...]

Greens to Liberals on bikie laws: YAAAH BOOO SUCKS!

By 24 June 2011

The Greens’ Shane Rattenbury is taking considerable pleasure in telling the Canberra Liberals “Told you so!” after the High Court of Australia threw out the NSW anti-bikie laws.
“In 2009 the Canberra Liberals argued strongly for the need for laws similar to those in NSW to be adopted in the ACT. They argued the Government needed [...]

NSW Parking Fines for Canberra residents?

By 24 May 2011

Does anyone know how enforcable NSW parking fines are?
My husband picked up a parking fine in Sydney in January 2011 in a car registered in my name. The fine came in the mail and he said to ignore it but now an enforcement notice has come and I’m worried that if it doesn’t get [...]

The donut city looms as NSW slashes stamp duty

By 9 June 2010

The Canberra Times has a piece on the fallout of yesterday’s NSW Budget (note how NSW cleverly wait until after they’ve seen the Federales).
The big thing for us is that in NSW houses under $600,000 will be exempt from stamp duty. This in turn will allow developments in the surrounding Canberra region to be priced [...]

NSW & ACT or is it should it just be ACT

By 21 November 2009

I see on that the national and local news tab have us with NSW and shows a daily telegraph icon. Why?
Do we not have our own news paper? Do we not have our own goverment? Our own isues? We are the Capital City of Australia right?
So should we fight for the change or just [...]

ACT businesses set to benefit from draconian NSW retail laws

By 13 September 2009

The NSW government has just passed laws restricting retail opening hours, preventing trading without an exemption on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
The spin in the CT and SMH is positive, saying it will allow retail staff the opportunity to spend more time with their families. However it also means retail workers [...]

NSW Bans Laser Pointers

By 21 April 2008

ABC News Story
Other randomly googled news site
It appears that in response to people shining lasers at aircraft, the state is banning laser pointers.  Does anyone know if there is a minimum strength of pointer, of if this is a blanket ban?  If it is a blanket ban, then be very careful driving to Queanbeyan if [...]
