Tim has sent this in with a question:
Are roadworkers completely stupid?!

Six years ago we were having some fun with potholes.
Since then the Fix My Street website has made the punters much happier.
Today Mayor Rattenbury has announced they’re getting a mobile interface in and will be able to use the positioning data common to modern phones:
“This new mobile friendly interface will make accessing information and payment [...]

As someone who often works in that area, I am more than a little bit excited. Alas the real work will not begin until next year, but still it will be nice to have a better crossing.
Over the next fortnight, high voltage electricity and gas lines will be lowered at Bowen Place. The work will [...]

Temporary lane and road closures in Pialligo and Majura
From Monday 18 February 2013, there will be temporary lane and road closures on the
following roads:
– Morshead Drive between the Monaro [...]
It doesn’t take much looking to find “exciting” roadworks anywhere in Canberra. What I can’t help but notice is that when these works are finished, they all look tacked on and cheap. Then there is quality of build which is usually average to poor.
Cases in point are the new merge lane from Parkes Way to [...]
Roads ACT is letting people know they’re getting set to start building the Majura Parkway:
“Preliminary work, such as establishing access for construction vehicles to the future road alignment, is now underway in preparation for major work to begin in February 2013,” Mr Gill said.
“To facilitate this work, traffic signs, controllers and partial lane closures will [...]
Meanwhile over on Facebook CanMeme’s had this to say:
The top pic was taken by WJ Mildenhall in the late 1920s in almost exactly the same spot as my pic taken during my lunch break today.

Has anyone noticed how the police are using hand held speed cameras at the roadworks in front of the UNI Pub?
Ok, fair enough, I believe the speed zones should be enforced, but why on Sunday when no one is working on the site?
Who are you protecting?
Or is it a nice and easy [...]

Roads ACT Director Tony Gill is letting us all know that the Belconnen to Civic Transitway is still rumbling along bollixing the roads around Civic as it goes:

“Speeding through work zones is extremely dangerous and risks [...]
This morning, as I wound my way through the various road work on the Coppins Crossing Rd – Uriarra Rd – Cotter Rd route around the new suburb of Wright, I came up behind a B double which (when the red light changed to allow us through the roadwork) had some trouble negotiating the route. [...]

ACT Policing was required to close the Monaro Highway in both directions early this morning (Thursday, June 28) after a drink-driver collided heavily with a roadside barrier and blocked traffic.
The incident was reported around 4.43am today and police, together with ACT Fire and Rescue, immediately responded. The silver Holden Commodore was found at the location [...]
Not sure what it is about the roadworks on Barry Drive that makes people think it is ok to speed through at what ever speed they like. Every word day afternoon I drive through there and hardly anyone slows down at either of the two areas the limit is reduced Belconnen bound. At least at [...]
They’re digging it up! Again! Near Sandford Street. Again!
In honesty, they’ve made pretty good progress today. There was no action this morning and by this afternoon a goodish size chunk was removed.
Less comforting is the knowledge that while road removal is a smooth operation here in our nation’s capital, road laying seems to be somewhat [...]

“Due to start in January 2012, this multi-million dollar project will greatly improve the capacity of the intersection of Barry Drive and Clunies Ross Street and in turn reduce traffic congestion [...]
The recent road resurfacing on the northbound lane of Adelaide Avenue under the Carruthers Street bridge, I’m sure everybody would agree, sucks.
Apart from the normal Canberran resurfacing strategy of just laying down the rocks and waiting for the cars to bed it in, this time they’ve outdone themselves. The road surface is de-laminating across almost [...]
I’ve noticed over the last two weeks or so quite a few surveyors on Gundaroo Dr between Gungahlin Dr and Crace. Anyone know of any official plans to upgrade the road?
During peak hour (peak 30mins?) it is actually quicker to use Curran Dr in Nicholls, down to the roundabout to turn right onto William Slim [...]
Claire Dennis Ave in Gordon was the proud recipient of this high quality work, today 7 November 2011.
A sample of the work, proudly undertaken by a contractor engaged by the ACT Government. Stones are totally detaching from the pavement in less than half a day.

WIN is tweeting that the long vexed tale of the Gungahlin Drive Extension (band name or what?) will be completed this October.
Who would have thought we should (hopefully) live to see this day?

The ACT Government wishes to advise motorists and other road users that the following roads in the City will be temporarily closed (weather permitting):
- Bunda Street (between Petrie Street and Binara Street) and;

Well, the bridge has been finished for ages. The scaffolding gone, and nothing has fallen down.
Why then does it take so long to clear up the leftover rubbish, put in a kerb or two and open up the two lanes on the highway?
It looks to me like a one day job to me. I for [...]
Minister for Planning Andrew Barr has tweeted the URL for plans to upgrade the intersection of Majura and Phillip avenues.
To date the intersection has distressingly required drivers to exercise skill and judgment and it’s easy to see why that must be remedied.
Chief Minister Stanhope is triumphantly announcing a $2 million upgrade of the Cotter Road out of the $200 million road upgrades budget for this financial year.
So what’s being done? Well this bit gets interesting:
“This upgrade to a two-kilometre stretch of pavement of the Cotter Road will provide motorists with a smoother and safer road that [...]
