I was just looking out to the mountains thinking “that looks like snow” and Monster of the Deep has sent in these pictures of snow in Tuggeranong.
If you’ve got any send them in to images@the-riotact.com .
Motorists are advised that Brindabella Road and Mt Franklin Road through to Bulls Head have now been reopened. This means that the only section of road closed due to snow is Bendora Road. Residents wanting to experience the snow first hand are, however, strongly encouraged to consider visiting an established snow recreation area, such as [...]
Todd has kindly sent in some pictures from his expedition to see the snow at Corin Forest today.
A few pics of the Snow at Corin today if you want, got down there once I heard the road was reopened.
More than enough snow for the kids (big ones also) to have a great time.
This in from Territory and Municipal Services:
Motorists are advised there is now access to Corin Forest mountain recreation area following work this morning to clear snow from Corin Road. Corin Road has now reopened to traffic through to the Square rock car park in Namadgi.
Boboyan Road has also reopened following the melting of snow.
Bendora Road, [...]
This in from Territory and Municipal Services:
Canberra residents are urged to exercise caution, particularly on rural roads, due to the wet weather and snow. Bendora Road and Mt Franklin Road from Piccadilly Circus have both been closed for safety reasons, with other roads likely to close.
Residents wanting to experience the snow first-hand are strongly [...]

Thinking about taking the Freeman family for a day to see some snow this weekend.
Not after anything fancy as none of us are skiers, just enough to get the littlies excited – any Rioters know where the closest snow to Canberra is at the moment?
Territory and Municipal Services have felt moved to let you all know how to get up in the mountains without endangering yourselves or others:
“Many local families want to experience the snow first hand. Unfortunately our unsealed rural roads aren’t designed to take the large volumes of traffic during the snow season.
“The Corin Forest Mountain Recreation [...]
Jivrashia has sent in this picture of the snow in the Brindabellas with this cautionary tale:
Thought I should share this as the Brindabella range is currently covered in thick snow and anyone attempting to trek through it should be well equipped.
The picture is along the Stockyard Spur trail, leading to Mt. Franklin Rd.
It seems that [...]
From The Eagle’s Nest we’re casting our beady eyes over the ranges of the Brindabellas and can see no sign of snow.
But the ABC has pictures of snow from surrounding parts of NSW so who are we to argue?
And to think the weather last week almost felt summery.
Anyone else seeing it?
Rodent went up Mt Franklin Road two weeks ago to check out the snow and sent in these pictures and an account of the experience:
This is the walk from before the Mt Aggie gate (not sure what called) up to Mt Ginini along Mt Franklin road… because when we went up (7.30am) the gates were [...]
Trying to get meaningful information about snow up in the hills around Canberra is quite difficult. However a few weeks ago I went for a walk from Corin Dam up to the hill there and there was a few inches of snow up the top. Quite pretty. That’s all I wanted. I was happy.
However, I [...]
“The good thing about Canberra is that it’s so close to the snow” – Some jerk.
As far as back-handed compliments go, this is one of the best, but let not that proud Canberran rage get in the way of you and the snow!
We are a mere 3 hour drive from a type of cold that [...]
Hi! I am a newcomer in Canberra. We would really like to go see the snow this month.
What would be the best place to go? I heard about Thredbo and Perisher. We are not looking to ski but just to have some fun family time, playing in the snow.
Is the trip advisable by [...]
Territory And Municipal Services are warning of road closures in the mountains.
The ACT Government wishes to advise motorists and other road users that Boboyan Road and Corin Dam Road (between Corin Dam and the Square Rock car park) are closed until further notice due to adverse weather conditions.
Barriers as well as warning and diversion signs [...]
The Bureau of Meteorology is warning of a blizzard to hit “parts of the Australian Capital Territory” tonight and tommorrow.
On the other hand last week they forecast this would happen last night and we haven’t seen a blizzard yet.
Somehow it always warms the heart to see the ranges all dusted in powder.

I have some friends visiting from QLD in a few weeks and they are hoping to pop down to the snow for an overnight trip.
They are a middle aged couple who have never seen snow, so they aren’t particularly interested in skiing or any other ‘adventure’ type activities.
They’re more just looking for somewhere [...]
ACT Policing and NSW Police will again join forces to target speeding, drink-driving and driver fatigue over the June long weekend as motorists head to the snowfields for the start of the 2011 ski season.
Officers from both police jurisdictions gathered today (Thursday, June 9) at the ACT/NSW border to help publicise the “Operation Snow Safe” [...]

Thinking of coming over from the coast to checkout the snow.
Is there any around Canberra, that will save me from travelling down to the snow fields??
Just want to show the missus some snow before the season ends.
Thanks for any replies. Cheers

The Canberra Times informs us that there’s an upside to the cold we’ve been shivering through.
Snow.
Despite a slow start, an unusually cold August brought with it massive snow falls, reaching depths of more than 118cm across the Snowy Mountain’s main ski resorts.
Selwyn Snowfields resort manager Paul Chandler said more good news was on its [...]
News.com.au has the sad tale (thanks to Jessieduck for the heads up) of a young Canberra man coming unstuck at Mt Buller:
The Canberra man’s body was found at about 11am (AEST) near Saint Christopher’s Creek, 1km from the popular mountain village and ski spot, the Herald Sun reports.
Police have revealed the man left a licensed [...]
AndyM has sent in this picture of the snow capped Brindabella Mountains to our west.

After going for a day trip to the snow on the weekend (up past Adaminaby), I was amazed to see how many cars were attempting the mountain roads in snowy/icy conditions without chains. There were many cars struggling to maintain traction (I saw a couple of cars slide slowly off the road).
I understand that 4WDs are [...]
Yesterday was, as I’m sure many of you noticed, colder that a witch’s teats (and a big hello to our our wiccan readers). For the technically minded the apparent temperature yesterday reached the lofty height of 1.1 degrees if you don’t count the balmy max of 1.7 degrees reached at 12.30am, from which point it [...]
