Telstra Tower

By 19 February, 2013 6

Whats all the fuss about??

I was pleasantly surprised when I took my international guests to the Tower today to show them Canberra from a height. We went up to the viewing gallery and had lunch at the kiosk, the food and coffee we had was fresh and tasty and reasonably priced!

I was there not quite 12 months ago and it looks like it has been jazzed up, it was clean and tidy and the staff were very friendly. On the way out we visited the heritage museum which had some very interesting communication pieces.

I have to say we had a great afternoon, and the view, well I never tire of the view of the city I live in.

‘The Fuss’ I think is that the only way to get higher in this city is a 4am baloon ride or sampling the local mushrooms.

Other than that….. bugger all.

What fuss? You mean people complaining about it? That was about the restaurant, not the cafe. And the general state of the tower, I suppose.

Not so much.

“Telstra Tower on Black Mountain, one of Canberra’s main tourist attractions, is an embarrasment to the city, and Canberra tourism. The public viewing areas are very shabby, access for visitors with disabilities is very poor, there is no signage pointing out Canberra’s principal attractions, the cups used by the coffee shop are a discrace and visitors are charged $7.50 for the privilage of the visit.

I apologised to my interstate visitors and will not return in a hurry.”

Mount Ainslie has a view almost as good and is free. Just don’t go up on Friday night when the local teenage population goes up ‘to enjoy the view’

The “heritage museum”? We had a look soon after the official opening. (Btw the display still stank of glues and polishes or something, the only other exhibition I’ve been to in recent times that was so irritating was the Gallery of Australian Design by the lake, I have to wonder how hard they’re trying, there’s more environmentally friendly products around to use now days.) The display was interesting, yeah, but it’s very small. Has everybody forgotten there used to be a display that took up the WHOLE room years ago?
