The ACTAS Wall of Fame unveiled

Labor’s Joy Burch is celebrating the launch of a “Wall of Fame” at the ACT Academy of Sport (ACTAS).

Intriguingly it only recognises alumni of the academy who’ve been to the Olympics or Paralympics.

As a result the 90 strong wall is heavy with hockey players, cyclists, and rowers. None of which are particularly famous, for all that they are no doubt worthy.

In any event ACTAS has now turned 20, so happy birthday to them.

Part of the system for supporting talented athletes around the country.
The amount of support and the sports covered vary considerably though.
ACTAS covers talented local athletes who’s sport or level does not qualify them for the AIS.

I used to work in the Library at the Sports Commission/AIS and after the staff and athletes of the Sports Commission/AIS, our other major clients were the local Institutes/Academies of Sport.

Why does the ACT have an institute of sport? Surely the population (and tax base) doesn’t justify it. Do either Newcastle or Wollongong have their own sports institutes?
