The Front Gallery have sent over a guide to their next two weeks of events:
30th August 2013 – Poetry Slam (Poetry)
Canberra Poetry Slam: WORD INJECTION
In August the Canberra Poetry Slam features the Interstate Poets Jackson (WA) and Jennifer Compton (NSW), as well as launch the latest Burley Journal.
The night will commence with the Open Mike at 8pm. Open Mike is an opportunity for experienced poets and spoken word artists, and those trying for the very first time, to read out any piece they wish. It can be prose, poems, other peoples words or the rambling randlings you come up with in front of the mic.
The Slam will commence around 8:15pm. The Slam rules:
– 3 minute limit
– 1 poem that you have composed
– no props or musical accompaniment
If you would like to compete, just find the two hosts during the course of the night and sign up.
The Canberra Poetry Slam prizes are sponsored by Palace Cinemas. The night will be hosted by JC Inman and Varisht Gosain.
The feature acts will be two interstate poets: Jackson (http://www.proximitypoetry.com/ ) from Western Australia and Jennifer Compton (http://redroomcompany.org/poet/jennifer-compton/ ) from New South Wales.
31st August 2013 – Lip Magazine launch party $10//7.30 (event party)
Bands: Cromwell, Fossil Rabbit, Northumberland+ mags on sale
Local india mag, Lip presents a night of music and magazines. Canberra bands Cromwell, Fossil Rabbit and Northumberland will provide the tunes to warm you on the last night of Winter, issue 23 of Lip will be available for sale on the night, and the friendly folk of The Front will keep you supplied with tasty drinks to wile away the evening.
4th September 2013 – Olivers Army $10 // 7.30pm (music)
A lifetime of cleverly concealed reflective brooding whilst maintaining a jovial persona has made Ryan Oliver’s music both intensely personal and deeply reflective whilst bursting with exciting live energy.
Olivers Army is the musical conjurings of Barossa Valley born singer songwriter Ryan Oliver. He started writing contemporary folk songs whilst traveling North America as a teenager and upon returning to his hometown of Adelaide, he formed a band with his twin brother in 2010. Since then the band have gone from strength to strength, releasing a self titled EP in 2010 ‘Olivers Army EP’ and their second, Alternative-Country influenced EP ‘II’ in 2012. Highlights included sold out releases at Jive and The Governor Hindmarsh Hotel and supports for Big Scary, Deep Sea Arcade and Eagle and the Worm, amongst others.
In 2013 Ryan relocated to Melbourne and formed a band with former Adelaide musical comrades Tom Krieg and James Roberts (The Battery Kids) Gina Somfleth (Menagerie) and Sam Billinghurst Walsh (James McCann, Peter Ewing, Ruth Lindsey) and will be releasing a new single ‘Golden Tree’ in September 2013.
5th September 2013 – Trappist Afterland (w/ Time and Weight) $10 // 8pm (music)
Time and Weight:
21 years in the making, Time and Weight like to keep it simple.
Trappist Afterland:
Trappist Afterland make spirit music for the dispossesed,they explore psychedelia, ritualism and chanting amidst folk songs. This is folk music for those who like it dark and profound, using unique instrumentation such as tablas and lutes, creating a intoxicating and deep mood.
Having just released their third album, Like a Beehive, the Hill was Alive, Trappist Afterland are one of Melbournes finest gems. The album is coming out later this year in the Uk and Europe on Eleven Willows and has been released locally uniquely packaged on a fine russian stout and will be available as they tour the east coast.
6th September 2013 – Alanna & Alicia $10 // 7.30pm (music)
“Deliciously idiosyncratic and saucy songs… wry, frank observations of life and love… quality quirky lyrics delivered with verve and the kind of close harmonies you’d expect from sisters.” Tony Hillier, Rhythms magazine.
Since last appearing at The Front, identical twin sisters Alanna & Alicia have recorded ‘Twinlines’ a beautiful new album of their original folky/jazz/roots songs, launching it at Port Fairy Folk Festival in March. They have also toured the Australian festival circuit, charming audiences with their sweet harmonies, and onstage warmth and fun.
Both are gifted songwriters who have won awards at national level, and their lyrics, equal parts heart and humour, sparkle with an original, intimate voice. They are excited to be bringing their new album to the Front and will also sing songs from their previous albums, ‘Two in a Book’‚ 2010 and ‘Funny She’s So Much Like Me’‚ 2006.
Their fine band features the amazing talents of Damien Neil (guitar) and Silas Palmer (violin and piano).
7th September 2013 – Abrori 7.30pm (music)

A music and movement collective that is in equal measures nostalgic and innovative, Arbori delivers folk storytelling through jazz-inspired melodies, like a favourite grandparent who won’t shut up. Having shared the stage with the likes of Matt Corby, Stu Larsen, the Falls, and Patrick James, as well as collaborating with a number of award-winning dance acts, Arbori has been noted as “one of Sydney’s most exciting young bands” (Timber and Steel) and “what the Australian music scene is missing” (The Ripe). Lead man Steven Barnard weaves together songwriting, choreography, and dance into a beautifully surprising experience.
8th September 2013 – Jack Carty 7.30pm (music)
Since singing his way onto the scene in 2009, Jack Carty has been a busy boy! Releasing a debut EP (2009 – Wine & Consequence), two critically acclaimed full length albums (2011 – One Thousand Origami Birds / 2012 – Break Your Own Heart). Winning a MusicOZ award for “Singer-Songwriter Of The Year”. Having music featured in TV shows from Covert Affairs (USA) to Packed To The Rafters. And clocking up in excess of 300 live shows nationally and internationally through: headline tours, festivals including Woodford, Canadian Music Week and SXSW, and supports for artists such as Josh Pyke, Matt Corby, Katie Noonan, Ingrid Michaelson, Justin Townes Earle and Joshua Radin.
BREAK YOUR OWN HEART peaked at #8 on the iTunes Australia Singer-Songwriter Chart and #15 on the Australian Independent Records chart, garnering 4/5 star reviews from The Weekend Australian and The Sydney Morning Herald, becoming the most named album in the “Album Of The Year” lists from contributors to Australia’s premier folk music blog Timber & Steel, and securing Carty a place as a top 10 finalist in the highly coveted APRA Professional Development Awards.
