Great news everyone! Finance have set govspace into the wild and now every program can have its own wordpress blog just like RiotACT!

The govspace platform makes it easier for Australian Government agencies to create blogs and websites, which will be hosted by Finance but feature an appearance, content and domain name chosen by the agency. govspace uses WordPress software and is housed on fast, reliable infrastructure.

It’ll be interesting to see which agencies make the most of it.

On the bright side my years of wordpress experience is now worth something!

If it’s so easy and cheap to make a new website – every government program would then want one. With the massive risk that it’ll be adding to the clusterf**k of .gov.au websites that are already floating around.

but they’re from the government: they’re here to help…

A great idea:

WordPress is good for those little websites that aren’t worth developing within a full-blown (and over engineered) CMS. Such as MS SharePoint.

The in-house development of new websites can be time consuming and costly. A process that’s frustrating to Comms people, if all that’s needed is half a dozen pages and a feedback facility for example.

Gov Depts would often look into the external development and hosting for these such websites. This is also costly, and involves contract management arrangements being put in place with the 3rd party.

WordPress does a lot of cool stuff out-of-the-box. But if you want to do something tricky, there’s a good chance that a plug-in already exists out there somewhere.
But if not, PHP developers are easy to find.
Yay for open source.

Not so much of a good idea:
