The Signs on the Tunnels on Parkes Way...

OK,

Now that we have figured out what the red lane on Belconnen Way is.

The next question I have about my trip to work in the morning is regarding the tunnel on Parkes Way, and the electronic signs that they have above each lane and in the median strip approaching the tunnel.

Do these work? Have they ever been used?

Having lived in Canberra all my life, I can’t recall them ever being used. Seems kinda pointless on such a small tunnel.

I think those lights on the Parkes way tunnel were a job lot that were thrown in by the people who sold them the tunnel. All the best tunnels have them.

I think the part time lights near the Isabella roundabout are to stop the traffic on Athllon in the afternoons to avoid a huge backup of traffic on Drakeford.

What do you mean “when the light is at the right angle”, The words are clear as day.

As I and my loved ones share the road with you can you please have your eyesight tested

Red I’ve never seen.

Red I have only seen a couple of times – maybe it is for when an Action Bus is running on time?

I don’t think I’ve ever once seen the signs being used! I have often gazed at them through my window as i sit still in traffic during peak hour.

Another random one – the “Part Time Signals” traffic lights on Athllon Drive just before the Isabella Roundabout and on Pialliago Avenue – When they switch on, I imagine they go straight to green, or is it orange? And when they turn off, do they get switched off from red, or green?

Ah, the mysteries of life…

OK next question – why are the lights in the tunnel sometimes orange, sometimes white, sometimes red or some combination thereof?

For as long as I can remember as a kid they were white during the day to try to match daylight brightness, and yellow at night to match the surrounding street lights. Then at some point it got swapped around, which means it’s too dark (yellow) during the day and too bright (white) at night.

Red I’ve never seen.

What IS the red lane for please? I have no idea!

They’re signalling the reptoid overlords.

I saw them on when they were doing a big breath testing op one day.

Oh noes! Emergency signs not used due to non-emergency!

I saw the yellow flashing beacon running once – wow that was a rarity.

That’s the signs at the side of the entrance. From what I remember they read “Lane closed”

Anyone ever stopped and heeded the Turn Engine Off When Stopped signs in the tunnel under Federation Mall on Commonwealth Ave/Adelaide Ave? That must be a rare event too.

I’ve always wanted to put some brackets on that middle sign, so that it reads,

Sth Canberra
(Cooma)

They (Contractors) were doing some work in the tunnel a few months back (east bound), and the signals were operating then, so yes they do!

I’ve seen them in use exactly once, when there had been an accident on the other side.
