The Sugar Deli

You may have seen the social media buzz around The Sugar Deli which officially launched in Canberra last week.

A simple premise this ‘digital dessert parlour’ offers the opportunity for Canberran’s to have a box of homemade treats delivered to their home or workplace.

I was fortunate enough to have a box delivered by The Sugar Deli last Wednesday which meant I could sample all the sweet goodness on offer.

I enlisted the help of a friend because whilst the idea of eating five cakes sounded appealing, I wanted to share the experience.

The menu changes weekly and I sampled the first week’s menu which included a splice ice cream cupcake, kit-kat cheesecake, a raspberry and white chocolate lamington, a caramel and pretzel cookie and a Nutella filled donut.

The ‘Starboy’ (Nutella donut) caught my eye first because Nutella filled donuts are one of my favourite things in the world. It was amazing – the Nutella was spread evenly throughout the donut which ensured satisfaction in every bite.

What is most impressive about The Sugar Deli – beyond the fact that cakes are delivered to your door of course – is the unique selection with original flavours and combinations.

‘Lord Lamington’ was one such treat. This white chocolate and raspberry lamington was a refreshing take on a traditional favourite.

My friend Jessica – who helped me sample the treats – echoed this view.

“The treats were different to anything I have ever tasted before,” said Jessica.

“I had never heard of some of the recipes, it was very innovative.

“My favourite was the caramel and pretzel cookie. The slightly salted pretzels on top were an amazing addition.”

In our public service dominated city, I feel The Sugar Deli will soon become a staple for morning teas and with 100+ orders in the first day this does not seem far off the horizon.
