Three Mothers Thai, Pad Thai. $10 lunch review

By 3 September 2012 6

pad thai

Always on the lookout for a sub $10 lunch to review I was intrigued to see the Garema Place stalwart Three Mothers Thai offering $9.90 Special Lunch (not to be confused with Lunch Special we presume).

And always being keen for a Pad Thai I was delighted to see noodly goodness on the discount menu.

Sadly though it was fundamentally disappointing.

No fire, no ground nuts, no lemon or lime wedge, and not even a single prawn lurking in there to mix things up.

All the things that take a Pad Thai from noodly sludge to greatness were absent.

I know they’re making it to a price but if that means making it badly I’d rather they didn’t.

The mung beans were nicely crisp, and it wasn’t oily.

There’s plenty of other offerings in the Special Lunch, which I can’t speak to, but I’d give the Pad Thai a miss (although they are faster than Wok In a Box across the way and probably a better deal than that endless source of disappointment).

(For more sub $10 lunches in Civic check the tag, if you’ve got recommendations let me know.)

For a few dollars more you can’t go past Pad Thai from the Asian Noodle House IMHO.

That picture makes me slightly queasy..Go down to River Kwai in Coolo court, enjoy their Pad Thai and then shut the gate on any of the other pretenders out there.

JB, do yourself a flavour and stretch the legs – there is value and delight to be found in a Civic sub $10 lunch. Indian in the bowels of the Canberra Centre – Taste of India, NAAN deal with rice. 10c change out of $10 so it qualifies – 1 curry, rice, NAAN and a can of sugar and bubbles coke sprite and I think fanta its awesome. Ask for the takeaway as there is more in a box you will be happy – Lamb Rogan Josh, Beef Madras or Buttter Chicken / Mango Chicken if you can cope with the dairy. Yes old school food court – but emerge and eat at the tables and seats above the Merry Go Round. Washes away a bad Pad Thai….. Cheers Qaxter

Mmmm Pad Thai, possibly the most unhealthiest takeaway you can buy…

Their “dry chicken/beef curry” on that same menu is excellent as is the Red Curry.
Some others have been forgettable, but those two are worth it.

We recently had a discussion at work on whether a Pad Thai should be hot or not (as in chili hot). Can anyone who has had it in Thailand settle the argument? I first had it in Singapore and it didn’t have much if any chili in it. But was full of flavour.

And the Pad Thai from Dickson Noodle House sucks. Totally bland and uninspiring. But I cannot comment on how the Civic one compares…
