Happy Mother’s Day weekend to all the Mums out there. This weekend is full of activities that will delight everyone in the family. Our top picks are the Mother’s Day Classic fun run this Sunday, the ice hockey game between Canberra Brave and Sydney Bears on Saturday, and Cirque Africa, a two-hour high-energy African circus production bursting with colour.

: Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC), Cnr Flemington Road and Northbourne Ave, Mitchell
Cirque Africa is in Canberra for the first time ever and is a two-hour high energy African circus production, bursting with colourful costumes, live music, dance and acrobatics. The show features 38 of Africa’s finest artists, along with an acrobat contortionist from 6 different African countries performing to a 9-piece live band playing original music composed for the show. It is a cultural, educational and visually spectacular production without animals. Tickets are available for this Friday 7.30pm, Saturday 1pm and 7.30pm, and Sunday 1pm.

BRAVE vs Sydney Bears

: Phillip Swimming & Ice Skating Centre, Irving St, Phillip; When: 5pm; Tickets: $15 per child, $20 per adult
It’s always a great weekend when Canberra’s ice hockey team have a home game. The BRAVE are in town facing off against the Sydney Bears this weekend.

Drawing the human: Life Drawing Classes
Where: National Portrait Gallery, King Edward Terrace, Parkes; When: 1pm; Tickets: from $40
Experiment with life drawing direct from a model with friendly staff from the Access and Learning team at the National Portrait Gallery. This comfortable and welcome class is perfect for beginners and those with some experience. Suitable for all ages and abilities. Only two places left as of Thursday morning, so make sure you book now.

PANDSI Cake Off

: Federation Ballroom, Hyatt Hotel Canberra, 120 Commonwealth Avenue, Yarralumla; When: from 2pm; Entry: Free
Never before has every cake in the Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book been on display in the one place…until now. All 107 cakes will be on display in the Federation Ballroom and you are welcome to wander through to view them (and place your silent auction bid) before making your way into the atrium to view the professional cakes that will be available to purchase via one of two live auctions. All funds raised will be donated to PANDSI (Post and Ante Natal Depression Support and Information Inc.).

Mother’s Day Classic

The Mother’s Day Classic is an annual fun run and walk raising funds and awareness for breast cancer research. It aims to deliver a fun, healthy and inspirational community event that brings the community together on Mother’s Day to support and remember those touched by breast cancer. Families, friends, colleagues, schoolmates, and corporate teams get into the spirit of the day with many sporting fancy dress and an abundance of pink. Many wear tribute cards dedicating their morning to loved ones who have been lost to or are currently fighting breast cancer. The festival atmosphere is also an opportunity to celebrate the life of survivors and enjoy a fun and healthy morning on Mother’s Day.
