ACT Fire & Rescue are currently on scene at Cooinda Street, Bruce, at the University of Canberra campus, attending to smoke issuing from a residential block of accomodation.

On arrival, firefighters found a residential area vacant and heavily smoke logged with all four stove stop elements in the common kitchen area turned on.

A passer-by noticed smoke and flames issuing from the unit and contacted Emergency Triple Zero (000) at 8.46pm.

Crews are now conducting air monitoring and ventilation operations.

The block of six units has sustained heavy smoke logging and heat damage.

The scene will shortly be handed to ACT Policing to investigate.
