Unearthed Review continues its inexorable progress through the Canberra musicians on the TripleJ Unearthed website.

Moving on through the “drummed” artists we come to Voss.

They have this to say about themselves:

Hooks and riffs are apportioned out carefully, thriftily. Meldorama. Voss are a group five people who all share the common trait of living in Canberra. We recorded an album called ‘The Inland Sea’ in 2009. Thank you for listening.

Voss are a very tricky band to review.

In parts their music exists in the space between the notes.

Janis joplin once said that writing about music is like dancing about architecture.

But writing about music that exists in the silences?

These songs need a lot of listens (also not conducive to easy reviewing) to get into, but once they got their hooks into me I was away on a journey over bleak country.

Which isn’t to say that in parts they don’t head off into madcap raucousness.

If you like modern alt.folk then you’ll probably really like this.

Four and a half stars.
