The ABC has a lengthy piece on Canberra’s Vikings team and its surfboat onslaught.

Halfway through the race, the Canberra Vikings are cruising towards their second consecutive title.

Sweeper Gavin Hunt says the crew train on a lake in Canberra, working on their technique and fitness before entering the swell of the Pacific Ocean.

“Four of the guys, they’ve only been in the ocean about four times in total, so everyday is throwing a different challenge at them,” said Mr Hunt.

“Whilst it’s not a natural fit, it actually allows us to do a lot of our technique work on the lake here in Canberra, so it allows us to perfect a lot of things that the coastal crews don’t have the time and the water to be able to do.”

They do run into some challenges when they hit the open water but crewman Anthony Pardy says the focus of technical aspects has put them far ahead of all of their challengers.
