Wanted: Taxi Marshalls

The ABC has this story on Aerial Consolidated Transport (Canberra Cabs?) wanting the ACT Government to supply goons security guards so they can set up a marshalling system to help convey all the drunks out of civic every Friday and Saturday night. Good idea or a waste of time? And who should pay for it?

The nightlink thing looks good, it’s way better to split a cab fare, it would be interesting to know how much the flat fee is.

How about giving the marshals a breathalyser do divvy up the queue – if you’re over say 0.15, you go in the drunks queue. If you’re under, you go in the mostly sober queue. Then the cabbies can decide if they want more fares but more hosing-out, or a quiet night with no vomit.

They will be allowed to beat the shit out of any party involved in a fight. Easy.

But would it be the Marshall’s job only to organise the taxi rank and the drunks to get home?
What if a fight breaks out? (which happens often in that rank) what are they allowed to do to deal with it?

Make the taxis that stop in the bus interchange in civic stop ONLY there (not within, say, 200 metres any direction), line up into one big line, and herd the drunks in as they arrive. Slap a 1 dollar surcharge per cab to pay for the marshall services. If someone starts a fights or acts like a twat, send ’em to the back of the queue, or ban them.

I think its a good idea.
Marshalls may also prove useful for coordinating rides for passengers with the same destinations- would be particularly useful for those boozehounds trying to get a cheaper ride home who have spent most of their fundage on drinks….*oooh, eery feeling of de ja vu creeping over me*

works well in other states (can think of Fremantly in WA). Stops fights over taxis and everyone gets a ride home.
