My day job sees me frequenting A.BAKER … once … more like twice a day. I am always experiencing food envy at 9am when I am waiting for my extra hot skinny latte. Eye-catching breakfast dishes fly past me and I am faced with the amazing, freshly baked, pastry cabinet every morning. So you can imagine my excitement at actually getting to sit down and eat there this morning.

Being a regular I have gotten to know the super friendly staff quite well, so I felt comfortable letting them choose my breakfast this morning (It’s a big deal! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!).

A perfectly poured flat white came out almost immediately (I like to mix it up sometimes) to keep me company while I waited for my meal.

Two stunning dishes shortly followed the coffee. The first was Toad-In-The-Hole; a dish of sourdough, eggs, chorizo and maple cured bacon, lardo, lemon and parsley (insert drooling here). The second; a bowl of Shaw River yoghurt, fresh and poached fruit, halva and hazelnuts.

The Toad-In-The-Hole was unreal. The two eggs were cooked inside the toast and were bright yellow and runny. The lardo, lemon and parsley were extremely complimenting. I have no words for the chorizo and maple cured bacon, they both had so much intense flavour. This is definitely a new favourite of mine.

After consuming the entire plate, I was beyond full but desperately needed to try the fruit and yoghurt. I was immediately hit with the unmissable flavour of hazelnuts. Yummo! This dish could almost be a dessert, yet it was also definitely a great breakfast. The fruit was incredibly fresh and again all the elements complimented each other. I could definitely see and taste the thought that went into creating these dishes.

I was so impressed with breakfast, the presentation and the wonderful produce; coffee from Two Before Ten; which is roasted locally, the bread and pastries that are baked by A.BAKER on site and the maple cured bacon, sourced locally and also cured by A.BAKER.

As I was leaving I was invited back to celebrate New Year’s Eve A.BAKER style, with a delicious feast, drinks and live entertainment to welcome in 2015. You can find out more at www.abaker.com.au

A.BAKER is located at NewActon Pavillion, 15 Edinburgh Ave, Canberra and they do take reservations!

It is a bit of a stretch to call that a version of toad in the hole, but they get lots of points for lardo. Such a good thing and rare in Australia.

Yep. Not toad-in-the-hole. Those are egg-in-a-basket!

I’ve been to A Baker twice. Both time the staff were rude and dismissive, and the menu seemed pretty expensive for what is provided. I won’t go back.

i’m sorry, but that is not toad in the hole – dunmatta what they they may try to tell you, nor how delicious it seems rather to be…
