Weekend Cafe Hot Spot: The Cupping Room

This weekend I decided to try out The Cupping Room for breakfast; a project by Ona coffee. So off I went to Civic. I had to wait about 10-15 minutes for a table (apparently it happens), but honestly, it’s worth the wait.

I’ve previously raved about their amazing salted caramel popcorn milkshakes, but as I discovered, The Cupping Room also serves really great food, that is simple, yet full of flavour. One of my favourite lunch dishes is their ribs …. but I’m actually supposed to be discussing their breakfast, so I’m going to move on before I get carried away.

I couldn’t decide to what to order because I am normally always order bacon and eggs for brekkie, but I was really intrigued by the Bircher Muesli. Out came this huge plate of coconut milk soaked chia and oates, topped with almonds, goji berries, grated apple and passionfruit pulp. It was divine. I reluctantly shared this dish with my mother, who now won’t stop raving about it and wants me to take her for breakfast more regularly.

Of course, I couldn’t go for breakfast and not order eggs (I just couldn’t help myself). Instead of ordering a dish from the menu, I decided to be one of those annoying customers who orders a bunch of sides; poached eggs and avocado on toast. The staff were very accommodating to my “special” order. For me, eggs are the real test at a café; they have to ooze when you cut into them, and oh were they oozy!

I have to admit, when I was first told I couldn’t order a latte, I was pretty disappointed. I mean who doesn’t make lattes?! But I quickly came around, I realized that this is 2014 and we’re drinking cold brew and flat whites (which is basically a latte), get with the times Sophia!

While I was eating breakfast, the pastry cabinet caught my eye. It was full of cronuts; those ridiculously amazing pieces of heaven that are a cross between a donut and a croissant. I had already ordered two dishes for breakfast and thought I should excersize self control, so I didn’t order one, but I promise I will be going back.

The Cupping Room just seems to have it all, apart from lattes … but all jokes aside, it really is currently my favourite cafe hot spot.

You can find the Cupping Room at 1/13 University Av, in the City. They are open 8am to 3pm Monday to Sunday.
