Hi all,

A quick note for those of use the crappy old wooden-decked bridge on the bike path to Weston Creek (this is the bridge just south of Scrivener Dam) – it’s being replaced through February and March, and will be closed from today, or so the sign says.

It reopens on either the 4 March (04.03) or 3 April (03.04) – I can’t recall which, as I’m an Arts grad and no good with numbers.

Kudos to the ACT Government for doing this (about time – it’s been shaking the beejebus out of southside cyclists for years now) although too bad they haven’t thought to set up a temporary replacement. The detour for most will now have to be down the Cotter Road (to meet the bike path from Curtin playing fields), through Stromlo on the MTB, or along the Parkway (not advised).

It reopened this week, was there any publicity?

I’ll be riding from Duffy to Braddon & back tomorrow, so will be my first experience with this detour. I’m sure it’s going to be a bit of a pain, but I’m happy that they’re fixing that bridge..it’s shocking. My trainer thinks it’s great…..more hills, longer distance. 🙂

Mad editing skills eh ?

Definetly closed.

Went this way on teh weekend on my mission from Ngunnawal to Duffy. The bridge is not only closed but the detur is a bitch. Instead of going right and down a hill, I had to go left and up th ehill that borderes the GG’s house and the equestrian centre following the signposted detour signs.
At cotter Rd you have to go under the bridge and wind your way back onto cotter road. Th edetour then takes you along cotter road (not a big fan of riding on roads – but i barely had a choice), across the parkway and past RSPCA and down teh hill into weston creek where the normal path joins up. All up I reckon its about 1500 to 1800 meter detour UP a hill that one would normally skirt the base of – and some on road riding to boot. Having almost completed my journey from Ngunnawal – and getting to te hpointy end of teh stick – this detour sucked much arse and near finished me off with a long ascend over cotter road from woden to weston.

Instead I fuct out on the Warragamba Street/Drive Hill in Duff(y).

I promise to tread lightly next time i run across it. Can we keep it open?

Thumper – it was mostly due to global wa…climate change. I blame Deb Foskey, and Kate Carnell.

It was still open when I rode over it tonight.
The signs are unchanged. No sign at the Cotter Rd end, was there before?

via Pedal Power
“– closure delayed until adequate alternative route in place.
. . .
However, the bridge will remain open for a few more days until the alternative route has been established. New signage will advise of the new closure date – yet to be determined.”

Personally I blame the people of Tharwa
I blame pink polo shirts…

but anyway, yep its a good move, but i won’t be able to use it for trainings 🙁

Thanks for the heads-up about that one – it’s a big detour back to an alternative route if approaching from the Weston Creek side, tho I think you can cut up to Cotter Rd along the horse trail near the ford downstream of the dam?

The forest on the other side of the river is not Stromlo btw, it’s usually known as Greenhills. Stromlo is west of Uriarra Rd (and Bluetts is north of Uriarra Rd and west of Coppins Xing Rd).

I’ll be pleased to see the re-worked bridge. The condition of the current bridge was not good. But, the sign says it won’t be open again until 4 April 08. That’s a fair time to have to find a different route. There’s no quick/easy cycleway alternative.

The reason the work is taking two months is they are going to install speed cameras and traffic lights to make it one way

Personally I blame the people of Tharwa

As long as there are no protests about replacing it with a modern concrete one that is…

Wow thats cool.

Last time I rode over that was about 6 months ago and its so steep and the clack clack clack – I thought for sure it was going to collapse under my considerable bulk.

Good to hear that its being replaced…
