Is it just me, or is there lots of crime and anti-social behaviour going on around Richardson, Chisholm, Calwell lately?

The Shops by smperris. Our local shop at Richardson, Canberra by Foxlow Snapper.

I seem to think that there is a surge in crime with so many articles in the newspapers and police reports on The RiotACT.

They’re not gangs, they’re little cowards who hang around in groups trying to be tough.

There is a southside youth gang which is ever growing and getting more people…

Not in terms of crime – I’d say that Griffith/Red Hill/Kingston/Bundah and Braddon/Ainslie are about as bad as it gets in that department!

Oh for a link button on the comment window…

^ Ha! Champagne comedy.

No, no, no. ‘Hill’ is a mistranslation of ‘mount’, and ‘little Rocky’ was the guy’s cousin. So ‘gungahlin’ is ‘the house where some white guy mounts his little cousin Rocky’.

Nothing wrong with Gungahlin. Crime is pretty minimal compared with Belconnen and out Tuggers way.

Jeez Hingo don’t go tell everyone!

WMC: yawn…

Feature Name GUNGAHLIN
Gazettal Date 26 February 1992
History Aboriginal word for “white man’s house”, but also said to mean “little rocky hill”. The area was originally spelt “Goongarline”. (Ref: Lyall Gillespie 1992), “Ginninderra – Forerunner to Canberra”.)
Commemorated Name GUNGAHLIN
Origin Named after the Aboriginal word ‘goongarline’, meaning “little rocky hill” or “white man’s house”.

From ACTPLA’s <a href="http://www.actpla.act.gov.au/tools_resources/maps_land_survey/place_names/place_search?sq_content_src=%2BdXJsPWh0dHAlM0ElMkYlMkZ3d3cuYWN0bWFwaS5hY3QuZ292LmF1JTJGUGxhY2VOYW1lcyUyRlBsYWNlRGV0YWlscy5hc3B4JTNGb2JqZWN0SUQlM0Q1MzkyOSZhbGw9MQ%3D%3D"place name search.

And so we can conclude that Gungahlin is entirely peopled with criminals. It’s not like they’d go around robbing each other.

Did you know that ‘gungahlin’ is Ngunnawal for ‘place where people marry their cousins’? True story. 😉

Nothing wrong with Gungahlin. Crime is pretty minimal compared with Belconnen and out Tuggers way. In fact, the only new graffiti I have seen out Gungahlin way is bored kids writing “Southside Pride” on the KFC building.

Cletus 2 where do you live… oh superior one

At the moment I live in Weston Creek. It’s not particularly great, but I don’t see why you think I’m the superior one — I’m not the one bragging about living in a utopian paradise. Where do you live?

I reckon inner south or inner north (not too close to the city) are the best areas in Canberra. But I wouldn’t call them paradise or utopia either.

Geez – if only these ‘crime statistics’ were factored in when calculating land values – my rates would be heaps cheaper!

Maybe we just report more goings on – the Northsiders don’t even bother letting anyone know if they’ve been punched in the face or had their wheels nicked….

ahappychappy12:22 pm 13 Oct 09

Wow, do you make random, out-of-nowhere assertions very often?

Thuggers is hardly as bad as it used to be? The kids just aren’t as smart as they used to be!

No surge AG…that’s pretty normal for deep south Thuggeranong…

…All those babies who gave Nappy Valley it’s name 20 years ago have grown up and are now rebels without a cause…don’t throw stones Gungahlin…your turn will come.

I have a friend who lives in Richardson and he says he doesn’t even lock his doors at night. He figures that theives would be too afraid to rob his house due to the threat of him actually catching them. Maybe living in a tough suburb is actually safer for those who live there.

ie Don’t shit in your own nest theory.

Personally, it’s a messy nest imo.

YES! our super cunning plan is working. make it look like tuggers is the scurge of the earth to our northern neighbours!!

Well then you’re doing a great job.

meanwhile we live in utopian paradise, where we have trees that block the winds, no heavy machinery clogging our roads and driving past our houses that were built too close to roads, beautiful mountains to gaze at, we can take a crap in our toilets without the neighbours hearing or seeing, no mc mansions that look tacky and tasteless and we have roads that have more than one lane out to other parts of canberra.

I envy you if you think Tuggeranong is a utopian paradise. Don’t ever set foot out of there, and you’ll die a happy man.

As far as Canberra goes, out Gungahlin way is pretty nasty but the Deep South isn’t that much to brag about in comparison.

hazzah!

“Is it just me, or is there lots of crime and anti-social behaviour going on around Richardson, Chisholm, Calwell lately?”

It’s just you.

Richardson, Chisholm and Calwell aren’t exactly the best suburbs…

Though I haven’t heard the regular police chase through the valley late on a Friday/Saturday night these holidays. The kiddies must be busy breaking into people’s houses instead.

Yep we’re an odd angry bunch on the southern side of town. So stay away, OR ELSE!

There was a police car in calwell this evening.

Nothing unusual.

Could just be related to school holidays, there are lots of bored kids/wannabee gangsters with nothing better to do.
