The Liberals’ Brendan Smyth is asking when we’ll be old enough to handle the truth on bushfires:

The Auditor General’s Bushfire Preparedness report has found ACT Labor to be in direct contravention of the Emergencies Act 2003 for not disclosing its resource requirements to meet the objectives of its Bushfire Management Plan.

Today, Shadow Emergency Services Minister Brendan Smyth will move a motion calling on the Government to release details of capability and resource requirements to meet the Territory’s bushfire preparedness.

“Repeatedly, the Government has refused to make this information available, citing that it’s ‘not considered appropriate for public release’,” Mr Smyth said today.

“The timing of the Auditor General’s report is noteworthy as this year marks the 10th anniversary of the devastating 2003 ACT bushfires.

“The Canberra Liberals share the Auditor General’s stance, that the Government is contravening Emergencies legislation.

“This is not good enough, so the Canberra Liberals are calling on the Government to table its capability and resource information.

“At the moment Canberrans can take no comfort in knowing that the Territory is adequately resourced to prevent another major bushfire and they deserve clarity,” Mr Smyth concluded.
