Since Channel 80 has been broadcasting in HD recently but I am getting no sound on my LG HDTV here in Canbera.

I am however receiving sound through my set top box on my old tv.

My TV is Multi-channel sound for 5.1 Dolby.

I have found others with the same problem. All my other HD channels work fine.??

Are they broadcasting in a strange audio format?

Depends on how new the tv is AndyC, and the set-top box itself for that matter. Are we talking sub $100 set-top box or a $500 hdd recorder with bluray and dolby 5.1 or what?

My set top box (sub $100) is hooked to my old CRT and works fine with every channel incuding win HD. The sound on my flatscreen is only coming from the inbuilt speakers and every other channel is fine and so was winhd before they upgraded.

One thing that might help is if you can tell us what sort of audio output you have your tv hooked up too. Have you got it outputing audio to a seperate aplifier via optical cable / coaxial? Or are you using the internal speakers? If you have the external amp and you don’t have audio, your tv could be doing some sort of signal conversaion that your amp doesn’t understand – you should be able to sort this in the tv menus, somewhere.

If you are using the inbuilt speakers, then i’m at a bit of a loss if a rescan doesn’t help. The 5.1 sounds like a bit of a misnomer – I don’t know of too many tv’s that actually have the 5.1 decoder inbuilt – most rely on the seperate amp to do the decoding..

Also try resetting your audio settings on the TV, if you are trying to use Dolby 2.1 instead of 5.1 or vice-versa, sometimes the audio stops working all together. I would reset your sound settings then rescan all channels and hopefully that fixes it. Also make sure your audio settings on the TV and the st-top box are set the same as each other, this can also cause the problem.

“Do you remember the golstar brand from years ago? Pretty shitty stuff sold at Kmart! Well LG is the same company, just renamed Lucky Goldstar. Doesn’t sound as if anything has changed.”

Actually close but not quite right, LG is a merger of 2 korean owned companies, one started by the other originally, Lucky and Goldstar, who merged to form LG and came up with the “life’s good” moniker for the new brand name.

From wiki:

LG Group founder Koo In-Hwoi established Lak-Hui Chemical Industrial Corp. in 1947. In 1952, Lak-Hui (pronounced “Lucky”, currently LG Chem) became the first Korean company to enter the plastics industry. As the company expanded its plastics business, it established GoldStar Co., Ltd., (currently LG Electronics Inc.) in 1958.

In 1959, Goldstar produced South Korea’s first radio. Many consumer electronics were sold under the brand name GoldStar, while some other household products (not available outside South Korea) were sold under the brand name of Lucky. The Lucky brand was famous for its hygiene products line such as soaps and Hi-Ti laundry detergents, but most associated with its Lucky and Perioe toothpaste.

In 1995, so as to better compete in the Western market, the company was renamed “LG”, the abbreviation of “Lucky GoldStar”. More recently, the company associates its tagline “Life’s Good”, with the letters LG. Since 2009, LG also owns the domain name LG.com. It is now in the VB.com Internet Hall of Fame among 59 large corporations to own a two letter domain name.

I was actually watching TV when WIN HD came back on air a week or two ago, and it knocked out the sound on all WIN Channels – 8 (WIN SD), 80 (WIN HD) and 88 (GO!)

Did a rescan and it fixed the problem, plus renamed the three channels to include ‘Canberra’

I read ‘LG’ and thought, ‘there’s your problem’.

My Beyonwiz dropped the audio from Go a few weeks ago and a rescan worked, preceded by a full power off at the wall.

I think your problem is with LG, which I have renamed Low Grade

I had a goldstar stereo 15 years ago, my brother has it now and is still going strong. I have never had a prob with any LG product..

This happened to us too. We have a new TV with a built in HD Tuner and an old TV with a set top box installed above it, and since last week on our older TV GO 88 is blank and ABC HD has no sound. But the newer TV is fine and all the channels are fine as well… Weird. I’ll rescan now.

The prob is not with LG. 2 of my work mates are having the same problem (not LG), Except one has his TV getting the sound but his PVR not getting the sound. Rescans have done nothing. I had no probs with Win before their so-called upgrade.

There have been changes to Win TV over the last couple of weeks mostly with bringing WinHD back to air. I also had audio problems. You will need to do a rescan to fix the problem. This is pretty normal procedure with digital TV.

Unfortunately the latest relaunch of Win HD does not provide 5.1 audio as it did previously which was the main reason I watched it. Now there are no HD channels in Canberra that broadcast in 5.1.

I think your problem is with LG, which I have renamed Low Grade. I wasted $799.00 five years ago for a VCR/DVD recorder which destroyed compilation DVDs when I tried to finalise them, and it couldn’t be preset to record more than six or seven programs. Useless. My mother had another LG machine (dvd/VCR) which lost all the information when the power went off necessitating a long and complex re-entering, and other equipment made by them has also proven to be unsatisfactory. We switched to Panasonic and haven’t looked back (and no, this is not a paid advertisement).

Thanks guys,
ABC HD sound is fine, I have done a rescan…still no change.

same thing happening to me, noticed on Friday, was thinking maybe its due to ABC3
will do a rescan and see how it goes

While I don’t know why your tv isn’t getting any sound, I can tell you WinHD (and ABC HD) use Dolby Digital on their HD broadcasts.

As they both use the same format, if you can get sound on ABC HD, then you should also be able to get sound on Win HD.

Try a rescan maybe? A good place for info on these sort of things is http://www.dtvforum.info

This might point you in the right direction about your problem.
