Andrew Barr has the good news that the special needs providing Woden School is going to extend to cover year 11 and 12.

I am pleased to announce the School, which currently caters for 84 students in years 7 to 10 with mild to severe special needs, will now expand to cater for students in their college years.

The expansion is part of the ACT Government’s commitment to improve services, access and educational opportunities for students in the ACT with special needs, a key recommendation of the Review of Special Education in the ACT conducted by Professor Tony Shaddock last year.

Expanding the school will not only avoid some students making the transition to another college to complete year 11 and 12, but with the majority of current year 10 students at the school living on the south-side of Canberra, it will allow them to continue to attend a school closer to home, reducing transport costs for parents.

Boy, does the wheel go round and round or what? Woden used to be a school that went to year 12 but with all the pressure on normalization and integration the decision was made to start up a unit at The Canberra College so all the Woden kids could be in a mainstream environment before they left school for the big wide world, but well supported and with appropriate courses for their needs. So, back to the beginning again huh.

Yea,like kids these days are gunna stay at school till 18.

Good good. There is still the ix of kids there from way north or way south that have a fair travel each day to school. But it was needed, given the squeeze at Black Mountain.
